Last Time Out
Huskies senior forward Klára Hymlárová delivered her first collegiate hat trick to lead SCSU to a weekend and season series sweep of St. Thomas, 6-3 at the St. Thomas Ice Arena on Saturday evening. With six conference points secured, the Huskies will enter the final week of the first half alone in fourth place with a three-point lead over (RV) Minnesota State. Hymlárová scored twice on the power play and added a huge go-ahead – and eventual game-winning – shorthanded goal late in the second period. Grace Wolfe provided a three-assist night, Jenniina Nylund added three points on a goal and two assists while Olivia Cvar scored a goal and provided an apple for four multi-point Huskies. Emma Gentry added the final strike, scoring her third of the series late in the third.
Huskies Primer
SCSU enters the series 11-8-0 with a 6-8-0 mark in WCHA action, winners of seven of their last nine games. Jenniina Nylund (11-13-24), Klára Hymlárová (12-5-17) and Emma Gentry (11-3-14) headline a dangerous Huskies top-six while Dayle Ross (0-8-8, +4, 34 BLK), Grace Wolfe (1-11-12, +1, 35 BLK), Regan Bulger (0-3-3, 39 BLK) and Taytum Geier (1-3-4, +4, 33 BLK) have anchored the defensive corps. JoJo Chobak (5-3-0, .923 SV%, 2.19 GAA) and Sanni Ahola (6-5-0, .922 SV%, 2.46 GAA) have become one of the top goaltending duos in the league.
The Series
The Huskies 1-3-0 this season against the Gophers with a nonconference win after being swept in a conference series back in October. St. Cloud State made a statement in Andover in early November, upsetting No. 1 Minnesota 4-1 in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Face-off Classic. SCSU earned their first win over a No. 1-ranked team since 2007, playing their patented style of hard-nosed, aggressive hockey to take down Minnesota for the first time since 2010. St. Cloud State hasn't earned a point against Minnesota since February 2, 2018 – a game that saw the Huskies erase a 3-1 deficit entering the third and secure the additional WCHA point with a Kayla Friesen shootout win.
Standings & Such
With the league winding down to the end of the first half, the Huskies find themselves sixth in a hotly-contested fight for fourth place. SCSU enters the weekend fourth in the league with 19 points – just two ahead of No. 7/8 Minnesota Duluth and three ahead of (RV) Minnesota State. The Bulldogs host basement-dwelling St. Thomas this weekend while Minnesota State welcomes No. 2 Wisconsin to Mankato. None of the three teams play conference games next weekend as SCSU and UMD are both off while the Mavericks travel to Long Island, meaning this is the final opportunity for movement in the first half.
Getting Gritty
Remaining true to the team's newfound identity, the grind-and-grit Huskies have four players found among the WCHA's top five leaders in blocked shots. True freshman Regan Bulger leads the league with 39 blocks while Dayle Ross is second with 35, one ahead of Grace Wolfe's 34. Taytum Geier is tied for fourth with 33 blocks of her own. As a team, St. Cloud State has 264 blocks – good for 13.89 per game – which lands them second in both categories across the WCHA.
Special Teams Stonewallers
St. Cloud State's penalty kill has been stellar this season, leading the league and ranking eighth nationally at 89.5%. The Huskies lead the WCHA with 81 penalties taken and pace the league in penalties taken per-game, taking over four trips to the box per night.
Powering Up
The Huskies complement their strong PK with a dynamic power play that presently ranks fourth in the league and seventh in the country at 25.0%. Klára Hymlárová has scored five power play goals, ranking second in both the WCHA and NCAA.
Looking at the Leaderboards
Many Huskies can be found across the WCHA statistical leaders entering the final week of the first half. Klára Hymlárová is second in the league with 12 goals while Emma Gentry and Jenniina Nylund are tied for third with 11 each. Nylund is tied for ninth with 13 assists and is part of a three-way tie for sixth in points with 24 on the season while her 70 shots on goal place her seventh. She has the sixth-most faceoff wins with 149 while Hymlárová is eighth with 145 and Gentry lands tenth with 113.
Stellar Stoppers
Goaltenders JoJo Chobak and Sanni Ahola have combined to provide SCSU with a phenomenal pairing, currently leading the team to rank third in the WCHA with a .920 save percentage. Chobak is third across the league with a .923 save rate while Ahola ranks fourth at .922. Nationally, Chobak is 17th and Ahola is 19th in save percentage.
Nylund's Climb
Jenniina Nylund's three-point finale moved her into a tie for ninth all-time in program history with 85 career points. This season, Nylund has 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points – currently ranked third in goals, sixth in points and ninth in assists across the WCHA.
Heating Up
Senior forward Olivia Cvar has provided back-to-back strong series, putting 16 shots on goal and skating to a plus-three with a 2-2-4 line. The Stonewall, Manitoba native is a longtime fixture among the Huskies' top-six – providing 25 goals and 18 assists for 43 career points in a SCSU sweater.
Sophomores Stepping Up
A key piece of the Huskies' success this season has been the steps forward taken by sophomore defenders Dayle Ross and Grace Wolfe, both of whom have been tasked with leading a thinned-out position group. Wolfe is on a career-best five-game point streak and leads all Huskies D in scoring with 12 points while adding 20 blocks over her last 10 games. Ross is a plus-nine over her past 11, providing a career-high eight assists over the course of the young season.
Chasing 20
St. Cloud State Women's Hockey earned their 10th win in last Friday's 3-2 opener against St. Thomas, reaching the double-digit win mark for the first time since 2018-19 when the program finished 10-25-2. The Huskies have reached double-digit wins the earliest in a season since 2008-09 and are seven wins away from matching the program's all-time mark in a season.
