Duffy holds Thunderwolves scoreless through five innings before four-run sixth derailed Huskies
PUEBLO, Colo – A strong start by senior Ryan Duffy (South St. Paul, Minn.) held the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves scoreless through five innings, but after a couple of defensive miscues for St. Cloud State (2-5) helped the Thunderwolves capitalized on a couple of big innings to seal a 8-2 victory. The Huskies took the first lead of the game off a Drew Bulson (1-for-4, RBI) single sending Paul Steffensen (1-for-5, 2B, R) to the plate giving SCSU a 1-0 lead. CSU-Pueblo would not get on the board until the bottom of the sixth which turned into a four-run inning forcing the Huskies to play from behind. Tate Wallat (2-for-3, RBI, 2 BB) had an RBI single to cut the lead to two, but it was not enough after CSU-Pueblo added four more between innings seven and eight to close out the game.
KEY MOMENT
In the bottom of the sixth, two wild pitches and a pass ball from St. Cloud State allowed the Thunderwolves to score three of their four runs in that inning. They took a 4-1 lead and never looked back.
TOP HUSKIES
Senior Outfielder John Nett
"Duffy gave us a great start today, we really had to battle at the plate this afternoon and I wish we could have given him some more run support. It's important to keep our intensity up throughout the whole ballgame, but if we can clean up a few issues we can get back in the win column."
UP NEXT
St. Cloud State will have a rematch with University of Colorado-Colorado Springs to wrap up their trip to Colorado Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT at Mountain Lion Park. Coverage can be heard on the KVSC Sports Stream or watched on the RMAC Network, with links available on the SCSU Baseball schedule page.
