Duffy strikes out 13 in complete game win in second game of doubleheader
RIVER FALLS, Wis. – St. Cloud State Baseball (10-9, 2-3 NSIC) played their first midweek series of the year against Winona State (3-10, 1-1 NSIC) in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Warriors had their first NSIC series of the year cancelled due to flooding at their home park and the game was moved to an all turf playing surface in Wisconsin. First National Bank of River Falls Field in River Falls was the sight of a split between these two Minnesota teams who split.
Game One: Warriors 7, Huskies 2
The Huskies got off to a quick start in game one when redshirt sophomore Tate Wallat's (2-for-2, HR (1), R, BB) solo shot to right gave SCSU a 1-0 lead. Eventually, the Warriors would find the equalizer in the bottom of the second off a sacrifice fly to knot the game at one.
Senior Tommy Thompson (4.2, 7 H, 7 R, BB, 4 K's) started his third game of the year and found trouble in the third. Winona States' Derek Baumgartner broke the tie with a three-run blast to give the Warriors a 4-1 lead. The Huskies would respond with an RBI single from junior Parker Savard (2-for-3, RBI) with the bases loaded to pull the Huskies within two.
That's as close as it got when the Warriors countered with a run in the fourth followed by two more in the fifth to give them a comfortable 7-2 lead. St. Cloud State mustered eight hits but committed two errors that proved costly in a 7-2 loss in game one of the doubleheader.
Game Two: Huskies 3, Vikings 1
Senior Ryan Duffy (9.0 IP, 3 H, R, BB, 13 K's) was untouchable in his fifth start of the year after missing the weekend in Sioux Falls. A career-high 13 strikeouts in his second complete game of the season was all St. Cloud State needed to earn a split.
"Yeah, especially playing so close to the weekend. You're trying to save your bullpen. That first game didn't go our way, but I just knew we had a good defense behind me, and I could trust my stuff," stated Duffy when asked about the pressure of starting game two of a double header when losing the first.
The Huskies would get on the board first via the long ball for the second straight game, sophomore Tyler Schiller (2-for-3, HR (1), 2 R, BB) first of the year came in the top of the second. SCSU would get some clutch hitting from senior Paul Steffensen (1-for-5, RBI) with an RBI single in the third and a bases loaded walk from redshirt junior Sam Riola (1-for-3, RBI, 2 BB) gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
Winona State would pick up their lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, but Duffy proved to be too overpowering against the Warriors line up. They were held scoreless in the last three innings and SCSU bounced back with a 3-1 victory.
