Huskies outscore Mustangs 19-1 in doubleheader at First National Bank Field
BRANDON VALLEY, S.D. – St. Cloud State Baseball (22-10, 14-4 NSIC) began their weekend series with a doubleheader sweep of Southwest Minnesota State (8-10, 1-15 NSIC) in dominant fashion on Friday. Another site reversal game saw the Huskies as a home team once again at First National Bank Field in Brandon Valley, S.D. So far, it's played kind to SCSU as they have now won four out of their five games after 7-1 and 12-0 wins over the Mustangs.
Game One: Huskies 7, Mustangs 1
St. Cloud State jumped out a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first off three hits to start the day. Redshirt junior Sam Riola (1-for-2, 2B, SF, RBI) got the scoring started on his sacrifice fly, then senior Paul Steffensen (1-for-3, RBI) singled to right field for his 30th RBI of the year.
Redshirt junior Riley Ahern (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's) departed early to due injury forcing senior Nick Brauns (1.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, K) to enter the ball game early than expected. He gave up the lone run to the Mustangs in the top of the second inning as the cut lead to 2-1.
Both teams were scoreless through the third and fourth, but St. Cloud State got the bats going in the fifth. After a leadoff walk by senior Max Gamm (1-for-2, 2 R, BB), redshirt sophomore John Nett (3-for-4, 3 R, 2B, 3-Run HR, 4 RBI) plated him with a double to right center. Nett would add on more insurance for the Huskies with a three-run blast to left field and SCSU led the Mustangs 7-1.
Freshman Ethan Lanthier (3.2 IP, H, 0 R, BB, 5 K's) was the third arm used for St. Cloud State and he continued to impress in his fourth win of the season. He allowed no runs allowed in his appearance held the SMSU off the board after their lone run to pick up a 7-1 win in game one.
Game Two: Huskies 12, Mustangs 0
Redshirt sophomore Luke Tupy (5.0 IP, H, 0 R, BB, 6 K's) made his first start since March 19 and picked up exactly where he left off, allowing one hit in a shutout effort against the Mustangs earned him his third win of the season.
Run support was no issue for St. Cloud as the Huskies made First National Bank Field look extremely small. Eight of their twelve runs were accounted for via the long ball. Gamm (2-for-4, 2 R, Solo HR) and Nett (2-for-4, R, Solo HR, 2 RBI, SB) went back-to-back to get the party started in the bottom of the third. After a base hit from redshirt sophomore Tate Wallat (2-for-4, 2 R), Riola (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI) hit the third bomb of the inning to cap off a four run third.
Next time to the plate for SCSU saw Riola at the plate with the bases loaded, as he went opposite field for a grand slam and open an 8-0 lead for St. Cloud State on his 14th home run of the year. St. Cloud State added four more in the fifth and sixth with some help from redshirt freshman Nick Friedges (1-for-1, 2B, 2 RBI) and his double to finish the scoring for SCSU. St. Cloud State run ruled the Mustangs in seven innings with a 12-0 shutout.
