
Perbix and Torve Selected as St. Cloud State Senior Athletes of the Year

Perbix was First Team All-NCHC and compete in the Olympics, Torve garnered AVCA, D2CCA All-America honors
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Athletics announced its 2021-22 Senior Male and Female Athletes of the Year on Friday, as men's hockey's Nick Perbix (Elk River, Minn.) and volleyball's Maddy Torve (Loretto, Minn.) were chosen for the distinct honor. The prestigious award is given annually to SCSU's top male and female senior student-athletes, not only on the field of competition, but in the classroom and in the community as well.
NICK PERBIX
Nick Perbix concluded his collegiate season with a banner campaign in 2021-22, as he earned first team all-conference honors and was one of two current Huskies to be selected to compete in the 2022 Winter Olympics. He finished his career with three all-conference honors after earning rookie team honors in 2019 and second team honors in 2021. Perbix was a member of three NCAA Tournament teams with St. Cloud State, including its second NCAA Frozen Four appearance and first-ever NCAA Championship game appearance in 2021. Over his four-year stay in St. Cloud, Perbix earned NCHC weekly honors six times, one monthly honor and was Academic All-Conference four times.
In his final collegiate season, the 2021-22 Hobey Baker Award nominee became the 10th Husky in program history to earn National Collegiate Hockey Conference First Team honors after totaling 31 points with six goals and a team-best 25 assists. His assist and point totals are both career-highs, while his 25 assists are the fifth-most in the NCHC and second-most by an NCHC defenseman this season. His 1.22 points per game in NCHC play led all defenseman as well. Perbix produced one of the most productive weekends in program and NCHC history against Miami (Jan. 21-22), tallying eight points on the weekend, including the first six-point game in NCHC history in Friday's win over the RedHawks. Among program records, he matched the school record marks points scored (six), assists (five), points by a defenseman (six) and assists by a defenseman (five). Perbix earned NCHC Defenseman of the Week honors twice (Dec. 6, Jan. 24), and was named the NCHC Player of the Month and Hockey Commissioners of America (HCA) Co-National Player of the Month for January after tallying a team-high 12 points – two goals and 10 assists – seven blocks and a +1 mark in five January games.
The fourth-year blue liner was one of two current Huskies to represent Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing this past February. He played in all four of Team USA's games in Beijing, recording an assist on a goal from teammate Sam Hentges in the Olympic quarterfinals.
In 135 career games, Perbix totaled 89 career points, 22 goals and 67 assists with four power play goals, five game-winning goals and a +21 mark on the ice. He earned 2019 All-NCHC Rookie Team honors following a 20-point (5g/15a) performance in his debut season (2018-19) and earned All-NCHC Second Team honors in 2020-21 after recording 23 points (7g/13a). In the 2021 postseason, Perbix earned a spot on the NCHC Frozen Faceoff All-Tournament and NCAA Northeast Region All-Tournament team honors while helping the Huskies earn its second NCAA Frozen Four and first-ever NCAA Championship game appearance.
Following the season, Perbix signed a professional contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) after being originally selected by the club in the sixth round (169th overall in the 2017 NHL Early Entry Draft.
MADDY TORVE
Maddy Torve saved the best for last, as she racked up both awards and assists in her final season with St. Cloud State Volleyball. As a fifth-year setter in 2021, Torve was named First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Region, First Team All-America, First Team Academic All-District and First Team Academic All-America by multiple organizations and was voted the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Outstanding Senior of the Year by the conference coaches. She was certainly worthy of every honor. Torve tallied 1,386 assists in her final season with the Huskies, moving to third all-time in program history with 4,242 career assists. For the first time in her career, she led the NSIC in both total assists and assists per set throughout the 2021 season and became the first St. Cloud State volleyball player in 20+ years to record multiple 60+ assist performances in a single season.
A five-time NSIC Setter of the Week and four-time NSIC Academic All-Conference team member, Torve graduated in December ranking third all-time in career assists (4,242), second in career sets played (432), third (1,386) and fifth (1,375) in single-season assists, sixth in single-match assists (68) and 10th in career matches (119). As if her resume wasn't impressive enough, Torve led the Huskies historic turnaround and piloted them to their best winning percentage (.844) in program history in 2021. In her final two seasons with St. Cloud State, Torve led the Huskies to their first NSIC playoff appearance in program history (2019) and first overall and tournament titles (2021) in program history. St. Cloud State also qualified for the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons* for the first time since the late 1990s and finished ranked in the AVCA top-10 in both 2019 and 2021.
