St. Cloud State places three runners in top 100 at conference meet
BISMARCK, N.D. – St. Cloud State Cross Country saw three student-athletes earn personal bests at the 2023 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday morning in Bismarck. Sophomores Hannah Little and Jaileen Medina along with freshman Paige Beason each established new PR's at McDowell Dam as the Huskies placed 14th at the conference meet.
Junior Cambrie Kowal and senior Erica Conrad led the pack by both placing in the top 80, finishing in 23:30.90 and 23:37.30 respectively. Beason joined them in the top 100 at 24:06.90 while freshman Alena Donahue (25:02.30), Little (25:07.10) and Medina (25:44.00) each earned top-125 finishes.
QUOTABLES – St. Cloud State head coach Gabrielle Brown
"I am proud of the group collectively for the way we showed up – this is one of the first times this season where we all went sub-26 minutes. It's exciting to see the process paying off as far as incremental progression collectively. Individually there were performances where people were consistent, but for me one of the biggest things I'm walking away with is that as a young crew with only three returners I'm very proud of the collective output. I'm looking forward to us continuing this progression as we look ahead to our regional meet."
"Our women have the awareness of the areas we need to continue to improve on and work on. The overall feeling as we reflect on the race and performances is certainly focused in those areas, celebrating in the moment that we are collectively sub-26 with the women that we put out here on the course today and that we are consistent with their PR's. We look to continue building on those things especially."
"We're celebrating our young Huskies – we are very much a young crew, and the fact that we showed up the way we did is one of the things that we're excited about. The thing with that crew is that through consistency and exposure we have so much faith with the work we're putting in that we're going to continue to get better. You get better with experience, and to have such a young crew that is trusting the training and trusting the process – getting out there and putting it all out there every single time – to see that the overall trajectory is getting better, it fires them up."
"The young women have done a wonderful job of stepping into those leadership opportunities, being such young people. Those are definitely the things that we are proud of for them. Coming into this meet they were fired up, they have so much energy and have the excitement to compete in one of the most competitive leagues – they're excited to be among the best of the best and elevate with the conference. I'm excited to continue to pour into them in those regards."
