St. Cloud State inks six guards to Quincy Henderson’s inaugural recruiting class
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball has signed six incoming freshmen to their 2023 signing class. Jamiir Allen, Nathan Bunkosky, Nate Dahl, Lucas Morgan, Izaac Neal and Vance Peiffer have each signed with the program and will begin competition in 2023-24. The six join fall signees Anish Ramlall and Wyatt Hawks as part of head coach Quincy Henderson's inaugural recruiting class.
"Our staff took a great deal of time evaluating, recruiting and getting to know this incoming class," said Henderson, "I could speak at length about the quality of these young men, but I think the quotes from their high school coaches adequately convey the impact they have had on their respective programs. Service over self is at the forefront of what we do, and I believe this group embodies that Husky Spirit. With a committed returning core and this young crew coming in Husky fans can look forward to watching these guys compete and develop during their tenure here!"
Jamiir Allen (6'0 G) joins the Huskies after a strong career at Wisconsin Lutheran High School in Milwaukee, leading the Vikings to a Regional championship and a Sectional Final appearance as a senior while earning WBCA First Team All-State honors. The gifted playmaker added a First Team All-Woodland West selection, averaging over 13.0 points per game with 4.0 assists, 3.2 boards and nearly two steals a night as the Vikings went 23-5. Allen earned Honorable Mention All-State and Second Team All-Conference nods as a junior by scoring 13.7 points per game on 56% from the floor and 45% from deep alongside three assists per game. Across his two years as a starter, Wisconsin Lutheran posted a 48-8 record.
Wisconsin Lutheran head coach Ryan Walz on Allen – "Jamiir is a lightning-quick player that can make big plays on both ends of the floor. The Huskies are going to love watching him compete. He has gotten better each year because he has a special blend of intelligence, skill and athleticism.
Nathan Bunkosky (6'0 G) comes to St. Cloud State following an excellent career at Ponte Vedra High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, guiding the Sharks to back-to-back Class 6A State Finals appearances. The four-year starter was named FACA District 6-6A Player of the Year as a senior and guided Ponte Vedra to two District and Region championships, closing his career ranked fifth all-time in scoring and graduates as the program's career steals leader. Bunkosky also finished second in career assists and holds the Sharks' single-season marks for both steals and assists.
Ponte Vedra head coach Ben Wilson on Bunkosky – "Nate is a proven winner and leader. He was the floor general that helped us reach back-to-back state championship games for the first time in school history. His physical style and hard-nosed approach dubbed him one of the top defenders in all of North Florida for all four years he started at PVHS. Every time Nate was on the floor, we were in position and had a chance to win every game. He made my job so much easier as the head coach. It was like having one of my coaches on the court helping get everyone where they needed to be at all times."
Nate Dahl (5'11 G) joins the Huskies after a stellar career at Buffalo High School in Buffalo, Minnesota, averaging over 24.0 points per game as a senior while being named a Top 10 Minnesota Mr. Basketball Finalist and guiding the Bison to the MSHSL Class 4A State Tournament. Dahl broke the program's single-season scoring record and led Buffalo in all statistical categories during his senior campaign, closing his career as a two-time All-Lake Conference selection. Nate will join his older brother Tony at St. Cloud State.
Buffalo head coach and St. Cloud State alumni Josh Ortmann on Dahl – "Nate is as high-character and intrinsically-motivated of a student athlete that we've had. He has had great mentors and role models that have played before him at BHS that have set the standard of what it takes to be successful on and off the court. Nate has done nothing short of exceeding expectations – he is as hard-nosed and competitive as they come. He will be a great fit at SCSU and we are excited to watch him succeed at the next level."
Lucas Morgan (6'4 G) comes to St. Cloud State after developing through the AUSA circuit in Sydney, Australia. Competing at the Australia U20 Championships this spring with New South Wales, Morgan shot 52% from the floor while posting 9.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.0 steals and just over one triple a game as a versatile two-way guard. He also spent time playing in the NBL One, appearing in seven games with the Northern Suburbs Bears. Morgan's older sister Issy is a two-year starting point guard at Davidson while his twin brother Mackenzie is headed to West Texas A&M.
AUSA coach Anthony Separovich on Morgan – "Lucas is the definition of a late bloomer – as a junior he was always cut from teams or struggling to get playing time because of his lack of size and athleticism. During this time, he developed a toughness and resilience that has allowed him to flourish over the past few years. Lucas is now able to impose himself physically on the defensive end with the ability to guard 1 through 4. Offensively he has the explosiveness to get in the paint and finish through contact matched with the ability to hit shots from deep. He is an extremely coachable and hard-working young man. His very balanced demeanor on the court keeps him from getting rattled and he possesses a level of consistency there that you seldom get with an athlete his age. He comes to St. Cloud with some pedigree and I am confident that he will add huge value to the SCSU basketball program both on and off the court.
Izaac Neal (6'6 G) joins the Huskies after a strong career at Oak Creek High School in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, leading the Knights to a Regional Finals appearance as a senior. Neal posted 13.6 points a game on 53% shooting last season, earning First Team All-Southeast Conference honors. He added Honorable Mention All-Conference accolades as a junior and was a three-sport standout at Oak Creek, becoming the volleyball program's career kill leader and earning a Wisconsin State Indoor Track & Field Championships appearance in the high jump as a senior – taking fifth in the event.
Oak Creek head coach Kyle Johnson on Neal – "Izaac is a great leader and extremely hard-working – a first in the gym, last to leave player! He is not afraid of any challenge that is in front of him. He will work extremely hard until he reaches the goals that are set for him and the team – a team-first guy! Outside of basketball, he is Mr. Everything. Volleyball Player of the Year, a track star, a three-time state champion in band and built a motorcycle from scratch!"
Vance Peiffer (6'8 G) comes to St. Cloud State following a tremendous career at Iowa powerhouse Waukee High School where he helped lead the Warriors to a Class 4A State Semifinal appearance as a senior. The Second Team All-State selection scored 11 points a night while adding eight boards and two assists per game in addition to shooting 59% from the field and 42% from three, setting Waukee's single-season block record on the defensive end. Peiffer averaged 12.2 points and 6.7 rebounds as a junior and helped Waukee to a Class 4A State Championship as a sophomore.
Waukee head coach Kevin Kanaskie on Peiffer – "Vance is a great player with a tremendous work ethic. He can stretch the floor with his ability to shoot threes at a high level. He plays above the rim on both ends of the floor by blocking shots and dunking. Not only is he coachable, but he's also a great leader who teammates gravitate towards – he's a great teammate and has a high basketball IQ. Vance loves to spend extra time improving his game. Late hours in the gym and getting extra reps in the weight room is normal for him."
