Huskies to host Purdue Northwest
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Men's Soccer (9-7-1, 6-5-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) to host Purdue Northwest in the GLIAC Quarterfinals on Saturday, November 9. Saturday's game is set for 12:00 p.m. at Husky Stadium.

Last Time Out
St. Cloud State closed out their regular season last weekend as they traveled to Wisconsin-Parkside and Purdue Northwest.
Friday's game against Wisconsin-Parkside saw St. Cloud State earn their first tie of the season. The Huskies and Rangers battled for the majority of the first half until UW-Parkside scored in the 31st minute to break the tie. The Rangers would ultimately find the back of the net again to close out the half as St. Cloud State trailed 2-0 at halftime. In need of a big comeback to not lose any ground in the conference standings, the Huskies came out ferociously as Mika Folstad headed a ball into the net off a feed from Owen Worsdell in the 51st minute. St. Cloud State continued their momentum as Noah Eklund equalized the game in the 64th minute off assists from William Gonzalez and Yannick Langerhuizen. The teams battled the rest of the half to a draw. The Rangers had a shot to win the game in the final five seconds, but Ramy Atia had a big-time save to ensure the game stayed tied. The Huskies picked up their first draw of the season with a 2-2 split against the Rangers.
Sunday's game against Purdue Northwest saw the Huskies fell behind 1-0 after allowing a goal in the 19th minute. The Huskies offense was relatively quiet in the first half until Andrew Holmes fired a rocket in the 42nd minute to tie the game right before halftime. The teams played out the final three minutes before going into halftime tied 1-1. The second half picked up for the Huskies as they totaled eight shots in the half after only have three in the first half. The teams battled late into the second half, still tied at 1-1, before St. Cloud State created a break opportunity in the 78th minute. Mika Folstad found Rhys Ward streaking up the field who then found Philip Caputo with an opportunity to score. Caputo fired a cross shot off his right foot that beat the keeper in the bottom left corner to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage. The defense for St. Cloud State closed out the game by not allowing a shot on goal in the final 12 minutes. For the day, Purdue Northwest could only muster three shots on goal. St. Cloud State earned their first comeback win of the season with a 2-1 victory in their regular season finale.
GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week
Mika Folstad was a crucial part of the offense in the Huskies 1-0-1 weekend and was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week. After trailing 2-0 at halftime against Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday, Folstad helped spark the comeback for St. Cloud State by scoring a goal in the 52nd minute. The Huskies would ultimately tie 2-2 against the Rangers as Folstad recorded a goal and two shots on goal. Sunday's game against Purdue Northwest was tightly contested with the teams tied 1-1 late into the game. The Huskies created a break opportunity in the 78th as Folstad dished out the game-winning assist to Philip Caputo who would ultimately give St. Cloud State the 2-1 victory. For the week, Folstad finished second in the conference with three points and was one of two players to tally a goal and an assist.

With their win on Sunday, the Huskies clinched the three seed and will play the six seed Purdue Northwest Pride in the playoffs. In the four years of the program's history, this will be the third postseason appearance for the Huskies and the second consecutive appearance where they host a quarterfinal match. Last season, the Huskies were left heartbroken after falling 4-3 on penalty kicks to Saginaw Valley State after being tied up 0-0 after two overtime periods. In 2022, the Huskies traveled to Davenport for the GLIAC Quarterfinals where they trailed 2-0 nearly halfway through the second half. St. Cloud State made a ferocious comeback with two goals in 10 minutes, but not even a minute after the game-tying goal, Davenport took a 3-2 lead with a goal of their own. The Panthers ultimately advance with a 3-2 win. St. Cloud State will be looking for their first ever playoff win on Saturday against Purdue Northwest.

The Pride took down Saginaw Valley State in the GLIAC Championship to qualify for the NCAA Tournament where they would be defeated 1-0 by Lewis. This year, Purdue Northwest returns four of their six All-GLIAC honorees from a year ago including Hugo Lorenzo who was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year, First Team All-GLIAC, Midwest Player of the Year, and All-American after tallying 33 points on 13 goals and seven assists. Jacob Battista was named Second Team All-GLIAC after scoring 23 points on eight goals and seven assists. On the defensive side, the Pride return Second Team All-GLIAC performers Martin Murrillo and Flavio Nardecchia. The losses for Purdue Northwest include GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-GLIAC Performer Eligh Williams and All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Ryan Moran.
