Huskies erase two four-run deficits but drop back-and-forth affair
SCSU struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning and one in the second to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Smith drove in two of those runs, the first on a single in the first inning and the second in the second frame after drawing a bases loaded walk.
Missouri Western would score the next seven runs of the game, including four in the fifth to chase Husky starter redshirt junior Luke Tupy (New Prague, Minn.) from the game. Tupy would log six strike outs over 4.1 innings of work while allowing four runs on three hits and one walk.
SCSU would mount its first comeback of the game in the sixth inning, sending four runs home to tie the score at 4-4. Senior Mitchell Gumbko (Ada, Mich.) began the rally with a double to plate freshman Blaine Guthrie (Emerald, Wis.), followed by a single from redshirt sophomore Brayden Jacobson (West Fargo, N.D.) to score Gumbko and one batter later a single from senior Cal James (Buffalo, Minn.) to score Jacobson.
Missouri Western regained the lead at 11-7 after four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Huskies would not go away, scoring four runs of their own in the eighth. Smith logged his third RBI in the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to send Gumbko home.
Missouri Western was able to muster up one more run in the eighth inning and held SCSU scoreless in the ninth for the victory.
