Huskies look to stay perfect in duals
St. Cloud, Minn.- No. 1 St. Cloud State Wrestling (2-0, 2-0 NSIC) kicks off 2025 by traveling to Marshall, Minn. to wrestle Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, January 4. The dual is set to begin at 3:00 P.M.

For the third consecutive Nation Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll, the Huskies were tabbed the No. 1 ranked team in Division II. SCSU accumulated 103.5 points in the latest ranking. Glennville State tallied 77 points to rank second and were followed by Wisconsin Parkside (75.5), Central Oklahoma (67), and Nebraska Kearney (65).

The Huskies hold 10 ranked wrestlers for the second straight poll after having nine in the preseason poll. SCSU is the only team in Division II to have a ranked wrestler at all 10 weight classes.

St. Cloud State closed out 2024 two weeks ago as they traveled to Moorhead, Minn. to face off against the Dragons on December 19.

The dual started at 125 where No. 6 ranked Conor Knopick put the Huskies on the board with 17-1 tech fall. At 133, No. 6 ranked Sam Spencer shutout Thomas Carrillo with an 11-0 major decision. No. 8 ranked Alyeus Craig made his dual debut and came away with an 8-3 decision to give St. Cloud State a 12-0. No. 2 ranked Colby Njos kicked off kicked three consecutive tech falls for the Huskies as he beat Cody Wienen 20-5 at 149. Joel Jesuroga and Nick Novak followed Njos with tech falls of their own to put the Huskies up 27-0. Bryce Dagel came away with a 10-3 decision in the 174 bout and was followed by an 11-2 major decision by Tyson Meyer at 184. Now leading 34-0, Dominic Murphy gave the Huskies their fifth tech fall of the dual with a 21-6 victory. Jadon Mims closed out the dual with a pin at the 3:33 mark to give St. Cloud State the 45-0 win.

Saturday's dual against SMSU will be the 52nd dual between the programs with SCSU holding a 39-12 record. Dating back to the 2006-07 season, St. Cloud State has won 17 consecutive duals against the Mustangs including their matchup last season.

It didn't take long for SCSU to make a statement against SMSU, as Conor Knopick wasted no time earning a takedown and back points before recording a fall at 1:21 over Carlo Arreola. After the Huskies earned another six points due to an injury default at 133 pounds, 141-pounder Alyeus Craig earned a 12-3 major decision victory over Jake Messner to improve to 11-3 on the season.
At 149 pounds, Nolan Throne won 4-3 over Luke Peterson, leading way to back-to-back technical falls from 157-pounder Nick Novak and165-pounder Anthony Herrera. Novak's match lasted 4:46 against Sean Howk as he won 16-1, while Herrera's 20-4 win took 5:59. Novak increased his team-lead in technical falls to seven while Herrera recorded his third technical fall of the season.
174-pounder Cole Glazier continued his impressive debut campaign with a 13-1 major decision over Lucas Hodges to improve to 16-1 on the season with four major decisions, five technical falls and five falls. Tyson Meyer got the start at 184 and earned a 15-0 technical fall over Adam Slyvester. The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs come into this dual holding a 2-1 record with an 0-1 mark in conference play. In their lone conference dual, the Mustangs were defeated 31-12 against UMary. The two wins for SMSU have come against Briar Cliff and Dakota Wesleyan. Coming into this season, SMSU was projected to finish 8th in the NSIC after going 4-7 with a 2-7 mark in conference play.

Via the latest Open Mat rankings (1/1/25), Adam Sylvester is the only ranked wrestler for the Mustangs as he comes in as No.17 at 184. Sylvester is 9-6 on the year with seven bonus point wins. In his lone conference bout, Sylvester defeated Dante Roggio of UMary 6-3. There are no Mustangs ranked in the latest NWCA poll.

Head Coach Chayse Jackson enters his fourth season with SMSU in the 2024-25 season. During his tenure, Jackson has tallied a 9-20 record with a 5-20 record in conference play. Jackson has coached two NCAA National Qualifiers and one All-American.
