Ahola becomes new program goaltending wins leader, Huskies score five-plus goals for first time since opening series of 2024-25
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 11/10 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (13-9-5, 8-9-4 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) took down (RV) St. Thomas, 5-2 in the first game of the team's home-and-home series on Friday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Fifth year goaltender Sanni Ahola (Helsinki, Finland) earned the win to become the program's all-time leader in goaltender wins with 35. Sophomore forwards Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) and Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) continued their strong play, leading the Huskies with three points apiece.
The Huskies got off to a fast start thanks to Sundelin's first goal of the game, which came just 61 seconds into the opening period after she collected the puck off the boards and finished at a sharp angle.
SCSU didn't add its second goal until seven minutes into the second period when Sauriol deflected in Sundelin's one-time blast from the right point. Seven minutes later, the Huskies pushed their lead to three when former Tommie, fifth year forward Brieja Parent (Forest Lake, Minn.) tipped a wrister from sophomore defender Carmen Bray (Nanaimo, British Columbia) past the UST goaltender.
The Tommies (7-18-2, 4-16-1) got on the board with three minutes left in the second period after converting on a power play opportunity, but St. Cloud State responded just 30 seconds later with its third goal of the period when redshirt sophomore forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) beat the UST netminder with a quick wrister to the far side of the goal after a pair of quick transition passes from senior defender Grace Wolfe (Owatonna, Minn) and junior defender Regan Bulger (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories) to extend the SCSU lead to 4-1.
Sundelin scored another quick goal, this one coming just 65 seconds into the final period, increasing the Huskies lead to four. St. Thomas scored its second power play goal of the afternoon halfway through the final period, making the final score 5-2.
