Five Huskies score and four record two points in series-opening victory
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (4-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) had five different Huskies score in a 5-2 win over Alaska Anchorage (0-3-0, Ind.) on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. SCSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead, outshot the Seawolves 36-21 and went 41-20 in the faceoff dot in the series-opening victory.
The Huskies scored 4:47 into the game on a beautiful play from its second line forwards. Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) started the play behind the goal, shoveling the puck over to freshman forward Noah Urness (Roseau, Minn.) at the goal line, who did a threw a pass behind his back to the slot where freshman forward Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Minn.) was ready to one-time his pass into the back of the net. Later in the period, SCSU scored its first of two power play goals on the night on senior defenseman Max Smolinski's (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) second goal of the season. Smolinski was camped out at the top of the left circle with space, and Roed's pass from the top of right circle fed him into a one-timer that deflected off a defender and into the back of the net.
In the second period, the Huskies scored on the power play again when it was Burnevik's turn on a one-time goal. With the Huskies working in the zone for nearly the entire power play, junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) found Burnevik alone atop the right dot and the Huskies leading goal scorer did the rest. Burnevik's slap shot went back-bar and out so fast the referee had to pause a second before signaling goal. Next up was sophomore defenseman Finn Loftus (Blaine, Minn.) scoring his first collegiate goal at 13:30 of the second period to put the Huskies up 4-0. After a flurry in front of the net, junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) and senior defenseman Mason Reiners (Edina, Minn.) went tape-to-tape at the top of the zone to feed Loftus at the right dot for a one-time slap shot to find the back of the net.
Finally, just before the end of the second period, Hall found the back of the net for the third time this season. Senior defenseman Josh Zinger (Red Deer, Alberta) sent in a shot from the blue line that found Hall's stick and beat the goalie for a score with 4.3 seconds left in the period.
