St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Opens Conference Play with No. 3 Western Michigan

Huskies host defending NCAA champions Friday and Saturday at the Brooks Center
THE MATCHUP
- St. Cloud State Men's Hockey will wrap up its seven-game home stand when the Huskies open NCHC play against the defending national champions, the No. 3 Western Michigan Broncos on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The series will begin on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7:00 p.m. CT on The CW and will finish on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 6:00 p.m. CT on NCHC.tv (subscription required) and The CW (tape delay) with the voice of the Huskies Jim Erickson and former Husky captain Geno Parrish will be on the TV call with Husky Productions providing broadcast support. On the radio on KNSI (99.3 FM / 1450 AM), Nick Maxson will handle play-by-play duties with former Husky captain Dave Reichel on color commentary. SCSU is coming off a dominate nonconference sweep of Alaska Anchorage last weekend, beating the Seawolves 5-2 and 5-1 at the Brooks Center last weekend. The Broncos are coming off a top-five series split against then-No. 3 Michigan, falling 4-0 in Ann Arbor on Friday before a 5-2 win on Saturday back at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Huskies and Broncos will meet for the 50th and 51st times this weekend with its only regular season meeting of the season this weekend. SCSU holds a slight 25-19-5 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs although the Broncos have won the last four matchups and six of the last 10 dating back to Nov. 2023. Last season, WMU won all four meetings and outscored the Huskies 22-5 en route to the Broncos first NCAA national championship. SCSU's season came to end last season in the NCHC Quarterfinals in Kalamazoo with Western Michigan winning 6-2 and 6-2 on March 14-15, 2025.

NO STOPPING BURNEY
- After becoming the first freshman in program history to lead the team in both goals and points in 2024-25, sophomore forward Austin Burnevik is picking up right where he left off a season ago. The rising sophomore ranks among the nation's best among goal scorers, ranking first in power play goals with five and second in overall goals with eight. Additionally, Burnevik is just one of three skaters in the NCHC to be averaging more than one goal per game and leads the way at 1.14 goals per game. The 2024-25 All-NCHC Rookie Team honoree has scored in every game this season with his seven-game point streak serving as the longest active scoring streak in the nation. He also scored in the last two games of last season, moving his active point streak to nine games, the longest scoring streak by a Husky since Grant Cruikshank score in nine straight games from Nov. 11 to Dec. 9, 2022. The Ham Lake native is the first Husky to score eight goals in the first seven games of the season since Matt Hendricks in hit the same mark in the 2001-02 season.
LETHAL POWER PLAY
The Huskies have been lethal on the man advantage to open the 2025-26 season, scoring 14 of its 25 goals on the power play with at least one power play tally in every game this season and four games with multiple power play goals. SCSU's 42.4 percent success rate (14-of-33) and 14 power play goals both lead the nation. In its last three games, the Huskies are a scorching 9-of-15 (60 percent) on the man advantage. The Huskies' four power play goals against Vermont on Oct. 18 were its most since scoring four against St. Thomas on Oct. 7, 2023 while sophomore forward Austin Burnevik netted two of the four power play tallies to become the first Husky to score two power play goals in the same game since Grant Cruikshank scored two at Omaha on Feb. 24, 2023. Burnevik's five power play goals is also the top mark in the nation.
GROSS IN THE DOT
- Junior forward Tyson Gross was dominate in the faceoff circle last weekend, tying an NCAA season-high with 20 faceoff wins in each game of the series. Gross went 20-2 in the dot on Friday and 20-5 on Saturday in the series sweep of Alaska Anchorage. His 40-7 performance in the dot lifted him to a nation's-best 69.4 percent (102-45) in the circle this season. Gross has scored in every game this season, collecting a goal and team-best eight assists, tying him for the longest active scoring streak in the nation (with teammate Austin Burnevik and one other).
BLAZING START TO THE SEASON FOR BURNEY & GROSS
- Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik and junior forward Tyson Gross have each jumped out to a hot start this season, beginning the 2025-26 campaign on a seven-game scoring streak. The duo are two of three players with a nation-leading active scoring streak of 7 games this season, joining Massachusett's Jack Musa.
- The pair's scoring streak extends past this season, with Burnevik's streak at nine consecutive games dating back to March 14, 2025 and Gross' at eight consecutive games dating back to March 15, 2025. Burnevik's seven-game point streak is the longest by a Husky since Grant Cruikshank had a nine-game point streak between Nov. 11 and Dec. 9, 2022.
- Burnevik scored in the first three games of the season to become the first Husky to score a goal in each of the first three games of a season since Jimmy Schuldt in the 2017-18 season (Oct. 7, 13, 14). His eight goals in the first seven games of the season are the most since Matt Hendricks in hit the same mark in the 2001-02 season.
- Last season, Burnevik became the first freshmen in program history to lead the Huskies in both goals and points with 13 goals and 28 points. Burnevik's 13 goals rank 17th among SCSU freshmen all-time and were the most since 2017-18 (Easton Brodzinski, 14). He earned All-NCHC Rookie Team honors, becoming the sixth Husky forward and 14th overall to earn the honor.
- Gross has been the leading assist man for the Huskies this season, recording five assists and one goal for six points. He has an assist in four out of five games this season and scored the lone goal in SCSU's 2-1 setback to Vermont on Oct. 17.
- After scoring just five points in SCSU's first 13 games of the 2024-25 season, Gross scored 20 points (7g/13a) in the last 23 games last season. Dating back to Dec. 6, 2024, Gross has produced nearly a point per game at 0.97 ppg with 29 points (8g/21a) in 30 games.
HENRICKS vs. HENRICKS
- This weekend's series will be the first collegiate meeting between brothers freshman defenseman Tanner Henricks (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Bronco forward Ty Henricks.
- Both brothers are NHL draft picks, with elder brother Ty being a 2023 sixth round selection of the New York Rangers and Tanner being a 2024 fourth round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
- SCSU's Henricks has produced one goal and three assists for four points in five games of his young collegiate career, with elder totaling two goals and four assists for six points in a hot start to his sophomore campaign.
ON THE ROED
- Freshman forward Nolan Roed was named the NCHC Rookie of the Week following SCSU's nonconference sweep of Alaska Anchorage. Roed scored three points with a +2 mark on the ice in the sweep.
- Roed scored a goal and had two assists for three points with a +2 mark on the ice in SCSU's Homecoming sweep over Alaska Anchorage (5-2, 5-1). The White Bear Lake native also added four shots on goal and a .576 mark in the faceoff dot (19-14). Roed had two points (1-1-2) in Friday's 5-2 win while going 10-7 in the faceoff dot, then had the primary assist on fellow freshman Noah Urness' (Roseau, Minn.) game-winning goal on Saturday while going 9-7 in the faceoff dot.
- On the season, Roed has two goals and five assists for seven points with a +2 mark on the ice and a .562 faceoff percentage (68-53). Roed's seven points are the most among SCSU freshmen, rank third among NCHC freshmen and 10th among freshmen nationally.
THE SHOSTOPPER
- Freshman goaltender Yan Shostak was named the NCHC Rookie of the Week after 40 saves and his first collegiate shutout in SCSU's series split with Vermont (Oct. 17-18).
- Shostak posted a 0.99 goals-against-average and .952 save percentage while not giving up a 5-on-5 goal all series. The Catamounts two goals on Friday came on the power play and in 3-on-3 overtime. The Husky freshman made 21 saves in Saturday's 4-0 victory to earn his first collegiate shutout. He is the first Husky freshman netminder to record a shutout since Feb. 10, 2018, when David Hrenak recorded the third shutout of his freshman campaign.
- The 2024-25 USHL Goaltender of the Year has started five of seven games this season for SCSU, posting a 3-2-0 mark with a 2.00 GAA and .916 S%. His GAA ranks third among NCHC netminders. Of the 10 goals Shostak has allowed this season, only five have come in 5-on-5 situations (4 PPG, 1 OT).
NOTES FROM LAST SERIES
- GAME 1 - 5-2 win vs. Alaska Anchorage (10-24-25)
	- SCSU's five goals are its highest scoring output this season and the most goals scored since a 5-2 win over Omaha on Dec. 7, 2024.
- The Huskies went 2-of-4 on the power play to improve to 40.7 percent (11-of-27) on the man advantage this season. SCSU has scored on the power play in all six games this season, its longest stretch of consecutive games with power play goals since a seven-game stretch from Feb. 4 – March 4, 2023.
- SCSU went 41-20 in the faceoff dot while junior forward Tyson Gross set a career high in faceoff wins with a 20-2 performance in the dot.
- After his 20-2 night in the dot, Gross is now 67.2 percent in the faceoff dot (82-40) this season.
- With two assists, Gross recorded his second two-assist and second two-point game of the season while recording his fifth career game with two assists and 13th career game with two points.
- Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik continued his hot stretch to open the season with his fourth power play and sixth goal overall this season. Since 2001-02, Burnevik is just the fourth Husky to score six goals in the first six games of the season, joining Matt Hendricks (2001-02), Nate DiCasmirro (2001-02) and Grant Cruikshank (2022-23).
- Burnevik recorded his second two-point game of the season and eighth of his career. His goal was the game-winning score, his third of the season and fifth of his career.
- Junior forward Barrett Hall scored a goal and assist for his third two-point game of the season and 11th of his career.
- Freshman forward Nolan Roed had a goal and assist for his second two-point game of the season. His goal was his second of the season.
- Senior defenseman Max Smolinski scored his second power play and second goal overall this season.
- Sophomore defenseman Finn Loftus scored his first collegiate goal in his 36th career game.
- Senior defenseman Cooper Wylie played in his 100th career game.
- Senior defenseman Josh Zinger has two assists in the game, his first game as a Husky with two assists and his fourth career two-assist game.
 
- GAME 2 - 5-1 win vs. Alaska Anchorage (10-25-25)
	- With the win, SCSU improves to 55-17-6 all-time against Alaska Anchorage and 35-4-4 against the Seawolves in St. Cloud.
- SCSU matched its season-high output for goals in a game from the night before. The 10 goals scored over the last two games are its most in a two-game series since scoring 12 against Bemidji State on Dec. 29 and 31, 2023.
- SCSU went 3-of-6 on the power play to improve to a nation-leading 42.4 percent (14-of-33) on the man advantage this season.
- The Huskies went 38-19 in the faceoff dot, marking the sixth time in seven games SCSU has won the faceoff battle.
- Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik scored two goals and now has eight on the season, a mark which ranks second nationally. His five power play goals lead the NCAA this season.
- Burnevik is the first Husky to score eight goals in the first seven games of the season since Matt Hendricks in hit the same mark in the 2001-02 season.
- Senior defenseman Cooper Wylie recorded his second two-point game of the season and fourth of his career with one goal and one assist.
- Freshman forward Noah Urness scored his second power play goal and third goal overall this season with his first period score. The goal was also his second game-winning goal of the season.
- Freshman forward Aiden Welch scored his first career goal and recorded his first career point with his second period score.
- Junior forward Tyson Gross matched his career-best for faceoff wins in the game with 20, hitting the mark for the second consecutive game after a 20-5 performance in the dot.
