No. 10/12 St. Cloud State Women’s Hockey Skates to Tie with No. 1 Wisconsin

Huskies pick up points at home against UW for time 2022, Badgers win shootout for extra WCHA point
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 10/12 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (4-9-1, 1-8-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) earned its first points at home against Wisconsin since January 28, 2022, after skating to a 4-4 tie against the No. 1 Badgers on Saturday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. UW earned the extra WCHA point after winning the seven-round shootout 2-1.
The Huskies opened the scoring, taking its first lead of the weekend after redshirt junior forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) tallied her fourth goal of the year just under seven and a half minutes into the game. Zimmermann won an offensive zone draw on the left dot and got the puck back near the goal line and scored from a sharp angle. Wisconsin responded with a goal of their own in the final five minutes of the period, to tie the game at one.
The Badgers (12-1-1, 8-1-1 WCHA) scored two more unanswered goals in the second period to extend their lead to three, before freshman forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) scored a goal with just over two minutes left in the second period to cut the SCSU deficit to one. After getting a breakout pass from redshirt sophomore defender Marie Moran (Lakeville, Minn.), freshman forward Payton Remick (Roseau, Minn.) and Mikaelyan found themselves on a 2-on-1 breakaway opportunity. Remick skated to the top of the right dot before making a pass to Mikaelyan, who went forehand, backhand to beat the UW netminder.
SCSU tied the game at three 7:19 into the third period when freshman defender Sydney Lamb (Lombard, Ill.) scored her first career goal. She found herself with lots of time and space as the teams were skating 4-on-4 and found the back of the net after taking a shot from the point.
Wisconsin retook the lead after netting the game's first power play with just under six minutes left in regulation, but the Huskies responded yet again, tying the game just under two minutes later after Mikaelyan scored a power play goal of her own after taking the penalty that led to the Badger's go-ahead goal. The freshman fired a wrister from the top of the right dot and found the back of the net for the second time in the game.
After a scoreless five-minute overtime period, the teams went to a shootout. Both teams missed each of their first four shots. Junior forward Payton Holloway (Tomah, Wis.) was the first player to make a shot in the fifth round, but Wisconsin responded with a make of its own. Both team's sixth shooters missed but UW ended the shootout in the seventh round, picking up a 2-1 shootout victory and the bonus conference point.
In her first game back from injury in over a month, sophomore goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia, Finland) made 52 saves.

- Kyrrkö made 52 saves (.929 save percentage) and only allowed three even strength goals. She was named the game's first star and one of the WCHA Brew Pub 3 Stars of the Night.
- Mikaelyan scored two goals including the game-tying goal that sent the game into overtime. She skated to a +2 mark and was named the game's third star.
- Lamb notched two points including her first career goal, blocked two shots and skated to a +2 mark.
- Junior forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) recorded two assists.
- SCSU moved to 9-100-5 all-time against Wisconsin and 5-46-4 all-time against the Badgers in St. Cloud. The Huskies earned their first points at home against Wisconsin since January 28, 2022.
- The Huskies have handed Wisconsin two of their last three losses/ties, dating back to last season.
- The Huskies moved to 2-9-1 this season against teams ranked/receiving votes and 3-5-1 in home games.
- SCSU went 2-for-3 on the penalty kill and 1-for-1 on the power play. For the season, SCSU is 34-for-47 (72.3%) on the penalty kill and 5-for-35 on the power play (14.3%).
- The Badgers won 58.1% of the faceoffs outshot SCSU, 56-38 and out blocked the Huskies 11-8.
- Kyrrkö's 52 saves were a career high and a season high for the Huskies. Her previous career high of 45 came last season against Ohio State on Oct. 19, 2024. Her 52 saves were the most by a SCSU netminder since Emma Polusny made 55 saves against Minnesota on Feb. 11, 2022.
- Mikaelyan became the second Husky with a multi-goal game this season after Sauriol did so against St. Thomas on Oct. 17. It was her second career multi-point game of the season, and she recorded a career-high eight shots on goal. Her +2 mark tied her career high. Her seven goals this season are the most on the team by three, her three power play goals are the most by two and she is tied for second on the team in points with nine.
- Lamb recorded her first career NCAA goal and her second multi-point game of the season. She posted a career high four shots on goal and now has five points on the year. She skated to a +2 mark and now leads the team in +/- at +9.
- Sauriol produced the eighth multi-assist game of the season for the Huskies. She now has five assists on the season and surpassed 45 career points. Sauriol is tied for the team lead in points with nine.
- Zimmermann scored her 15th career goal. Her four goals this season are tied for second on the team.
- Senior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) skated in her 120th career game and tallied an assist for the 60th point of her career. She is tied for the team lead in points with nine and assists with seven.
- Moran skated in her 50th career game and recorded her first assist of the season.
- Freshman defender Maélie Pion (Sherbrooke, Quebec) recorded an assist for her fifth point of the season.
- Sophomore defender Siiri Yrjölä(Vantaa, Finland) posted an assist for her 10th of her career. She is tied for the team lead in assists this season with seven.
