SCSU drops first dual of the season
St. Cloud, MN. – No. 9 St. Cloud State Wrestling (5-1, 2-0 NSIC) dropped their first dual of the season as they fell 25-7 to No. 1 Nebraska-Kearney. UNK took eight of the 10 bouts with overtime victories in four of the matches
With the dual starting at 125, Ben Aranda came up with a first period takedown to lead 3-1 after an escape by Caleb Coyle. Coyle took bottom to start period two and responded with an escape and takedown. Aranda tacked on a pair of escape points to tie up the match at 5-5 as the wrestlers headed into overtime. Coyle scored a takedown at the 1:22 mark of the period to come away with an 8-5 victory.
At 133, Dominic Ducato also headed into overtime as he faced National Runner-Up and third ranked Zach Ourada. Both wrestlers scored an escape which led to extra time. In the overtime period, the two scrapped and produced multiple chain wrestling moments, but it was Ourada coming out victorious with a takedown with 16 seconds remaining in overtime.
The Lopers extended their lead over the next two matches as No. 4 Joseph Airola beat Jayce Luna 12-6 and Brady Collins tallied a major decision against Jeroen Smith at 149.
With SCSU trailing 13-0, No. 2 Joel Jesuroga put the first points on the board as three takedowns and riding time propelled him to an 11-2 major decision against No. 9 Cael Robb.
UNK added another overtime victory as No. 7 Trenton Munoz beat Derek Johnson 4-1 to extended the lead to 16-4.
In the second match between two ranked wrestlers, No. 9 Otgonbayar Batsuuri beat No. 4 Bryce Dagel off of two takedowns and two stall penalties.
No. 3 Cole Glazier gave the Huskies their final victory of the match as he defeated Kaden Hart 7-2.
Moving to 197, Tyson Meyer faced off against No. 1 Jackson Kinsella. This was the fourth match that went into overtime as it would be tied 1-1 with each wrestler producing an escape. This bout however went into a tiebreaker with neither scoring a point in overtime. Meyer pushed for stall calls on Kinsella most of the match and while he got one, he was unable to get another for what would've been a crucial point. In the tiebreaker, Kinsella started on bottom and escaped in 13 seconds. Meyer was unable to escape faster than that as he would be defeated 2-1 to the top ranked wrestler at 197. The Lopers would take the last match at 285 as they ultimately came away with a 25-7 win.
