Abdelfattah spent seven years at SCSU as both a player and coach
St. Cloud, Minn.- Former St. Cloud State Men's Basketball guard and coach Mahmoud Abdelfattah was named Head Coach of the Iowa Wolves; the NBA G-League affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Abdelfattah spent seven years at St. Cloud State as a player from 2008-2010, a student assistant in 2010-11, and then as an Assistant Coach from 2013-2017.
Abdelfattah came to St. Cloud State in the 2008-09 season after spending time at Wilbur Wright College in Chicago, Ill. That year would be the first season where St. Cloud State competed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) after previously being a part of the North Central Conference (NCC). After placing third in the regular season standings, Abdelfattah and the Huskies ran the table in the Conference Tournament to become NSIC Tournament Champions. SCSU qualified for the NCAA Tournament that season and entered as the No. 2 seed. The following season saw St. Cloud State repeat as NSIC Tournament Champions and again reach the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies ultimately reached the Elite Eight and produced a 29-6 record on the year, which is still the most wins in a single season in program history. Abdelfattah finished his tenure as a player appearing in 35 games with the Huskies going 51-15 during that span.
Following his playing career, Abdelfattah spent one season as a student assistant coach in 2010-11 where St. Cloud State went 15-14 and reached the NSIC Tournament Championship game for the third consecutive season. He then returned back home to Chicago where he served as the Varsity Assistant Coach and Sophomore Head Coach at Perspective Charter School. Abdelfattah had also been coaching Team NPL, a 17-U AAU team, since the summer of 2009 and had won the National AAU Tournament in Orlando, Florida, posting an 8-0 record, in the summer of 2013.
Abdelfattah came back to his alma mater in the fall of 2013 where he spent time as an Assistant Coach under Kevin Schlagel for one year and then Matt Reimer the following three seasons. Abdelfattah and the Huskies produced a 70-50 record in his tenure as an Assistant Coach. They would reach the NSIC Tournament every year during his four years. Abdelfattah played a crucial role coaching and developing talent such as Gage Davis, Scottie Stone, Jordan Poydras, and Matt Craggs. All four were named All-NSIC under Abdelfattah with Davis, Stone, and Poydras making two All-Conference selections. Davis went on to become the all-time leader in career points and field goals made at St. Cloud State while being named a 2019 All-American. Stone is the all-time leader in three-pointers made and fourth all-time in career points. Poydras scored 1219 points in his career and Craggs made First Team All-NSIC in his lone year at SCSU.
After his four years as an assistant at St. Cloud State, Abdelfattah was then hired by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Houston Rockets G-League affiliate, in 2018 where he served as an Assistant Coach before being promoted to Head Coach in 2019. With the Vipers, Abdelfattah won two G-League Championships; one in 2019 as an Assistant Coach and then in 2022 as the Head Coach. He would also be named G-League Coach of the Year in 2022. The following year he would be promoted to the Assistant Coach of the Houston Rockets under Stephen Silas and then became the Head Coach of the Sydney Kings in the National Basketball League (NBL) in 2023. After a one-year stint with the Kings, Abdelfattah served as an Assistant Coach and Team Scout for the 2025 Men's AmeriCup Qualifying Team. Throughout his stops in professional basketball, Abdelfattah has coached notable players such as NBA All-Star Alperen Sengun, NBA Champion Isaiah Hartenstein, Jalen Green, Jabari Smith, and Tari Eason.
In Des Moines, Iowa, Abdelfattah will inherit an Iowa Wolves team that went 7-27 in the 2024-25 season but has a rich history of developing talent up to the NBA affiliate Minnesota Timberwolves. While the roster is not currently finalized, 2025 second round pick Rocco Zikarsky and 2024 second round pick Enrique Freeman are currently on two-way contracts. The Timberwolves 2025 17th overall pick in Joan Beringer will also likely spend some time in Des Moines with the G-League team.
