Atia tallies six saves in clean sheet
St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Soccer (3-2-1, 1-0-0 GLIAC) opened up conference play Friday evening and came away with a victory as they defeated Davenport 1-0 at Husky Stadium. The Huskies scored in the 76th minute of the game and were stout defensively the rest of the way to capture the shutout win.
The first half was a battle between the two goalkeepers in Ramy Atia for the Huskies and Beau Hudd for the Panthers. Both offenses generated seven shots in the half with three landing on goal. Each keeper came up with big time saves to keep the game knotted at 0-0 headed into the halftime break.
Moving into the second half, play ramped up as both teams battled for the always important conference victory. St. Cloud State applied offensive pressure throughout the second half with multiple scoring chances but ultimately broke through in the 76th minute. The Huskies would have a throw-in deep in their offensive zone as Ryder Delport delivered a pristine ball into the box. Yousif Atia made a great play on the ball as he centered it off his head. After being knocked by two Davenport defenders, the ball landed at the feet of Andrés García who blasted the ball past Hudd with his right foot to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Following the goal by García, the Huskies defense did their part to secure the three-points in the standings by limiting Davenport to only three shots the rest of the way with only one landing on goal. St. Cloud State went on to capture a 1-0 shutout victory in their conference opener against Davenport.
