Huskies fall in series finale at Ridder Arena
MINNEAPOLIS – No. 15/14 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (8-16-2, 4-14-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) dropped its series finale against No. 3 Minnesota, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.
The Gophers (22-4-0, 16-4-0 WCHA) killed off two early penalties before converting on a power play opportunity of their own after SCSU was called for a five-minute major in the first period for the second consecutive game. The Huskies were unable to score on their third power play of the first period and Minnesota took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
After the first 17:56 of the second period went scoreless, St. Cloud State tied the game with a goal from freshman defender Sydney Lamb (Lombard, Ill.). Senior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) sent a pass from the Huskies defensive zone off the boards into the offensive zone and Lamb skated past a Gopher defender and converted on the breakaway with a backhand shot around the Minnesota netminder.
Minnesota regained the lead with a goal just 1:04 later and opened the third period with a goal just 11 seconds in to extend its lead to 3-1. The 'U' added another even strength goal in the period before scoring an empty netter to bring the game to its final score of 5-1.
