Bats Lead the Way for Vikings in Friday Sweep
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – St. Cloud State Baseball (11-12, 7-3 NSIC) opened up their series against the top team in the conference, the No. 15/16/21 Augustana Vikings (17-5, 11-0 NSIC), with a pair of losses in a Friday doubleheader. The Vikings won the opener 16-2, before taking game two 13-3.
Game 1: AUGIE 16, SCSU 2
Facing the top offense in the conference, the Huskies trailed early after Augustana scored three runs in the top of the first on two singles, two stolen bases, a walk, hit by pitch, error, and wild pitch. The Vikings would make it 4-0 in the second, stealing their third base of the game before a two-out RBI single.
The Huskies would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the second. With two outs, senior Wyatt Tweet (Russell, Manitoba) singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Redshirt senior Hayden Konkol (Denmark, Wis.) followed with a two-out knock of his own, singling to drive home Tweet and get SCSU on the board.
The Vikings stretched the lead to 6-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth, before breaking the game wide open in the sixth. Augie brought 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 times, picking up nine hits in the inning including two doubles and a three-run home run.
SCSU finished off the scoring in the bottom of the second, as sophomore Austin Baumhover (Van Meter, Iowa) scorched a ground ball past the Augustana shortstop and ended up on second base on the error. Baumhover would then attempt to steal third and came home to score when the throw to third sailed into left field.
Augustana closed out the game from there to win 16-2.

Game 2: AUGIE 13, SCSU 3
The Huskies would score first in game two, grabbing the lead in the bottom of the first. Redshirt junior Hayden Frank (St. Michael, Minn.) led off the game with a rocket to second base that couldn't be handled cleanly. One batter later, with redshirt senior Eric Bello (Manati, Puerto Rico) at the plate, Frank took off for second. Bello grounded a single through the right side, executing the hit-and-run to perfection as Frank went to third. That set the stage for junior Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.), who lifted a high fly ball to left field. The Augie outfielder couldn't find the ball in the sun, and Castro ended up on second with a two-run double to make it 2-0 SCSU.
The Vikings responded almost immediately, scoring seven runs in the top of the third and bringing 10 batters to the plate. That was the start of 13 straight runs for Augie, who scored three more in the fourth and the final three in the sixth. Augustana finished with 10 hits in total, including two home runs in the fourth.
SCSU plated their third run in the bottom of the sixth. Redshirt senior Liam Moreno (Sun Prairie, Wis.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Ryan Cahoon (Northfield, Minn.), who entered the game as a defensive replacement, launched a high fly ball to right center field that split the outfielders and landed at the base of the wall, scoring Moreno easily.
Augustana closed things out in the seventh by shutting down the Huskies, and the game ended after seven innings due to the 10-run lead.
