SCSU Softball Sweeps Minnesota Crookston 6-0 in Both Games

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The Huskies matched up against the University of Minnesota Crookston this afternoon in an NSIC conference doubleheader. The games took place in the Husky Stadium Dome and kicked off at 11 a.m.
St. Cloud State swept the Golden Eagles, defeating them 6-0 in both games one and two.
The Huskies are now 22-15 overall, and 7-3 in the NSIC. Minnesota Crookston now stands at 2-23 overall, 1-13 in conference action. St. Cloud State will return to play this weekend as they travel to Wayne State College on Saturday, April 13 for a 12 and 2 p.m. doubleheader. The Huskies will play in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Sunday, April 14 against the Augustana College Vikings in a doubleheader slated for 12 and 2 p.m. In case of changes due to weather, an announcement will be made on scsuhuskies.com.
Game One vs. UMC Recap:
The Huskies got off to an early lead in game one as they were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead by the end of one inning of play. Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.) led off the inning with a double to right field. Stephanie Roan (St. Charles, Ill.) followed up with a double of her own, scoring Canova for the Huskies to go up 1-0. After a Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) walk, she was eventually able to score on a passed ball at home plate to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
St. Cloud State's four additional runs all came in the sixth inning. The Huskies scored four runs on three hits and two Minnesota Crookston errors to go up 6-0 after six innings.
Two Husky players finished with multiple hits in game one. Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.) and Megan Lehnen (Burnsville) each posted two hits against the Golden Eagles in game one.
Overall, the Huskies finished with six runs on eights hits and one St. Cloud State error. Minnesota Crookston was scoreless with four hits and three errors.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound and pitched the complete seven innings. Franks allowed just four hits, walked three batters and struck out seven. Franks now holds a 15-8 record on the mound this season.
Game Two vs. UMC Recap:
The Huskies got off to another great start in game two as they were able to score all six runs in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Breana Canova led off with a double down the left field line. Kelly Olson followed up with a two RBI home run to give the Huskies an early 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Marie Imholte (St. Cloud) led off with a bunt single. Taylor Thomas (Fontana, Calif.) followed up with a single out of reach of the second baseman. With two runners on base, Canova stepped to the plate and crushed a three-run home run over the fence to give the Huskies a 5-0 lead. With no outs, Olson drew a walk. Hogan and Grell both grounded out, but each advanced Olson to put her at third with two outs. Kelsie Fitch (Carver) singled to left center to score Olson and give the Huskies a 6-0 advantage.
Breana Canova had a team-high three hits in game two. Canova went three for four with three RBI's.
Kelsie Fitch and Marie Imholte each added two hits in the game. Overall, the Huskies produced six runs on nine hits and commited no errors.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo) started on the mound for the Huskies and pitched seven complete innings to earn the win. Merritt allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out eight. Merritt now holds a 7-7 record on the mound this season.
