Softball Splits in Doubleheader vs. Wayne State

Omaha, Neb. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team matched up against Wayne State College this afternoon in an NSIC conference doubleheader. The games took place in Omaha, Neb. at Omaha North High School.
St. Cloud State split with the Wildcats, defeating them 18-0 in game one and falling 5-6 in game two.
The Huskies are now 23-16 overall, and 8-4 in the NSIC. Wayne State now stands at 21-7 overall, 12-2 in conference action. St. Cloud State will return to play tomorrow as they take on Augustana College at 2 and 4 p.m. These games will be held at North H.S. in Omaha, Neb. as well. Live stats will not be available for the games.
Game One vs. WSC Recap:
The Huskies had a 5-0 lead heading into the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth, the Huskies put together 13 runs to end the game early with a 18-0 final score. St. Cloud State combined for 18 runs on 17 hits and no errors. Wayne State combined for no runs on just three hits and had two errors.
Four St. Cloud State players finished with three hits in the game. Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.), Kelly Olson (Oak Grove), Kelsie Fitch (Carver), and Marie Imholte (St. Cloud) each posted three hits for the Huskies. Canova and Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) each drove in four RBI's for the team. Three of Hogan's RBI's came off of a three-run homerun in the sixth inning.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound and pitched the complete six innings. Franks allowed just three hits, walked seven batters and struck out six. Franks record on the mound improved to 16-8 after game one.
Game Two vs. WSC Recap:
The Huskies got off to a slow offensive start in game two as they fell behind the Wildcats 0-4 heading into the fifth inning. The Huskies were able to tie the game at five all heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Wayne State was able to get a run on the board to end the game in the bottom of the seventh.
St. Cloud State had two players finish with multiple hits in the game. Breana Canova went two for four at the plate with two RBI's. Kelly Olson also finished with two hits and two RBI's. Olson and Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Colo.) each homered in game two.
Overall the Huskies produced five runs on nine hits and no errors. Wayne State finished with six runs on 12 hits and one error.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo) started on the mound for the Huskies and pitched five complete innings before being relieved by Kelly Franks. Merritt allowed 11 hits, walked one and struck out four. Franks finished the game for the Huskies, giving up one hit and walking three batters.
