St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team matched up against Bemidji State University this afternoon in an NSIC conference doubleheader. The games took place in the Husky dome, however, the Huskies were the designated visiting team due to schedule changes based on field conditions.
St. Cloud State swept the Beavers, defeating them 5-0 in game one and 11-2 in game two.
The Huskies are now 25-16 overall, and 10-4 in the NSIC. Bemidji State now stands at 8-29 overall, 2-18 in conference action. St. Cloud State will return to play this weekend as they host Minot State University and the University of Mary. The Huskies will take on Minot State in the Husky Dome on Saturday, April 20 at 12 and 2 p.m. On Sunday they will match up against the Marauders with games scheduled to begin at noon.
Game One vs. BSU Recap:
The Huskies had a powerful start to game one vs. Bemidji State as Kelly Olson (Oak Grove), just the second batter of the game, stepped to the plate and crushed a homerun over the right field fence. The Huskies held their 1-0 lead until the third inning when they were able to get another run on the board after consecutive hits by Olson and Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.).
St. Cloud State put together a string of offense in the 6th and 7th innings to earn three more runs and finish with a 5-0 victory. Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Colo.) led off the sixth with a double to right center. Taylor Thomas (Fontana, Calif.) followed with a base hit out of reach of the short stop and Natalie Shaft (Sioux Falls) singled down the left field line to score Thomas. The Huskies added their final run in the seventh as Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.) led off with a single to right center. Olson bunted Canova into scoring position and Hogan hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Canova for the fifth and final run.
Olson and Thomas each finished with two hits in the game and Mikayla Hogan had a team-high two RBI's.
Overall, the Huskies scored five runs on 11 hits and committed no errors. The Beavers were scoreless on three hits and no errors.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound and pitched the complete seven innings. Franks allowed just three hits, walked three batters and struck out 13. Franks record on the mound improved to 17-9.
Game Two vs. BSU Recap:
The Huskies got down 0-1 after one inning of play, but the deficit didn't last long. They were able to tie the game at one all in the top of the second as Steinle singled to center field and was able to score off of a triple down the right field line by Taylor Thomas. The Huskies seemed to get on a scoring roll as they were able to put enough runs on the board in the third, fourth and fifth innings consecutively to end the game early after five innings of play.
