Softball Drops Two to Minot State, 3-5 and 2-8

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team matched up against Minot State University this evening in an NSIC conference doubleheader. The games were held in the Husky dome and took place at 5 and 7 p.m.
St. Cloud State lost both to the Beavers, falling 3-5 in eight innings in game one and 2-8 in game two.
The Huskies are now 25-18 overall, and 10-6 in the NSIC. Minot State now stands at 30-5 overall, 12-4 in conference action. St. Cloud State will return to play tomorrow, April 21 as they take on the University of Mary at 2 and 4 p.m.
Game One vs. BSU Recap:
The Huskies had a powerful start to game one vs. Minot as Kelly Olson (Oak Grove), just the second batter of the game, stepped to the plate and crushed a homerun over the fence. The Huskies held their 1-0 lead until the fifth inning when the Beavers scored three runs on two hits to give them a 3-1 lead.
St. Cloud State trailed 1-3 with one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh when Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Colo.) stepped to the plate. Steinle crushed a ball over the left center fence to tie the game at three all and keep the Huskies in the game.
Minot State put together two runs on one hit in the top of the 8th and the Huskies were unable to score, ending the game after eight innings of play with a final score 3-5.
Kelly Olson, Jordan Grell (Moville, Iowa), Nicole Steinle, and Megan Lehnen each finished with one hit in the game. Steinle had a team-high two RBI's.
Overall, the Huskies scored three runs on four hits and committed no errors. The Beavers collected five runs on three hits.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound and pitched the complete eight innings. Franks allowed just three hits, walked 11 batters and struck out nine. Franks now holds a 17-10 record on the mound this season.
Game Two vs. BSU Recap:
The Huskies got down 1-4 after one inning of play and couldn't seem to recover. The Huskies combined for two runs on six hits and committed no errors. St. Cloud State was led by Megan Lehnen (Burnsville) who was two for three at the plate in game two.
Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.), Kelly Olson, Kelsie Fitch (Carver) and Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) also finished with a hit in game two. Both Husky runs were scored off of errors committed by the Beavers.
Minot State combined for eight runs on 12 hits.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) started and pitched all seven innings. Merritt allowed 12 hits, walked three and struck out five. Merritt now holds an 8-8 overall record on the mound this season.
