Husky Softball Splits vs. U-Mary, Wins 2-1 and Falls 0-4

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team matched up against the University of Mary this evening in an NSIC conference doubleheader. The games were held in the Husky dome and took place at 2 and 4 p.m.
St. Cloud State split in the doubleheader against the Marauders, defeating them 2-1 in game one and falling 0-4 in game two.
The Huskies are now 26-19 overall, and 11-7 in the NSIC. U-Mary now stands at 19-16 overall, 8-10 in conference action. St. Cloud State will return to play Wednesday, April 24 as they travel to Aberdeen, SD to take on Northern State University in a doubleheader set to take place at 1 and 3 p.m.
Game One vs. U-Mary Recap:
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Huskies were able to put the first run on the board on a Kelly Olson (Oak Grove) RBI double. St. Cloud State scored one more run in the sixth inning as Megan Lehnen (Burnsville) hit an RBI single to center scoring Danielle Rahn from second. The Huskies were up 2-0 heading into the seventh when the Marauders made a seventh inning rally. U-Mary combined for one run on two hits and one St. Cloud State error, but the Huskies got out of the inning and sealed a 2-1 victory.
Overall the Huskies scored two runs on six hits and committed one error. The University of Mary scored one run on four hits and committed one error.
Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.), Kelly Olson, Jordan Grell (Moville, Iowa), Megan Lehnen, Natalie Shaft (Sioux Falls, SD), and Marie Imholte (St. Cloud) each had a hit in game one for the Huskies. Olson and Lehnen each had an RBI.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound and pitched the complete seven innings. Franks allowed just four hits, walked 1 batter and struck out nine. Franks improved her record to 18-10 this season.
Game Two vs. U-Mary Recap:
The game was held scoreless until the top of the fifth inning in game two. U-Mary was the first to score this time as they put one run on the board in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. The Huskies were unable to respond as the Marauders held them scoreless all game. U-Mary's starting pitcher Cherlyn Trujillo started and pitched both games this afternoon and allowed just four St. Cloud State hits in today's second outing.
The Huskies scored no runs on four hits and committed two errors in game two. U-Mary scored four runs on seven hits and committed two errors.
Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Kelsie Fitch (Carver), Natalie Shaft and Marie Imholte each collected a hit in game two.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) started and pitched three scoreless innings before being relieved by Franks. Kendra would come back to pitch inning seven as well. Merritt allowed two hits, gave up zero runs, walked one batter and struck out one. Franks pitched three complete innings, gave up five hits and walked three. Franks now holds a 18-11 record on the mound this season.
