Husky Softball Splits vs. Northern State: Wins 3-0 and Falls 1-3

Aberdeen, S.D. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team matched up against Northern State University this afternoon in an NSIC conference doubleheader. The games were held on the turf of Swisher Field and took place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
St. Cloud State split in the doubleheader against the Wolves, defeating them 3-0 in game one and falling 1-3 in game two.
The Huskies are now 27-20 overall, and 12-8 in the NSIC. Northern State now stands at 18-20 overall, 10-10 in conference action. St. Cloud State will return to play this weekend as they host Concordia University, St. Paul and Minnesota State University. The dates and times of these games will be revealed later this week.
Game One vs. Northern State Recap:
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead as they scored one run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single to left by Kelsie Fitch (Carver) to score Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.). St. Cloud State held their 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth when they added two additional runs. The Huskies combined for four hits and left three runners on base in the top of the fifth which was spurred by a Kelly Olson (Oak Grove) two RBI homerun. The Huskies defense held Northern State scoreless for the entirety of the game.
Two Husky players finished with multiple hits in game one. Jordan Grell (Moville, Iowa) and Kelsie Fitch each posted two hits in the first game. Kelly Olson, Megan Lehnen and Marie Imholte each added a hit as well.
Overall the Huskies scored three runs on six hits and committed one error. Pitcher Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) held Northern State to just one hit in the game.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound and pitched the complete seven innings. Franks allowed just one hit, walked six batters and struck out six. Franks improved her overall record on the mound this season to 19-11.
Game Two vs. Northern State Recap:
The Huskies jumped out to another early lead in game two as they put one run on the board in the top of the first off of a Kelly Olson homerun to left center. St. Cloud State's lead didn't last long as Northern State tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. The Wolves put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to go up 3-1 and were able to hold this lead to end the game.
The Huskies scored one run on seven hits. Northern State finished with three runs on ten hits.
Kelly Olson displayed dominant offense today as she finished game two hitting three for three from the plate, with one walk. Olson had the team's only RBI in the game. Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls) finished with two hits in the game in four at bats. Jordan Grell and Marie Imholte each added one hit during the game.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) started and pitched all six innings for the Huskies. Merritt allowed ten hits, walked two and struck out four. Her overall record on the mound this year now stands at 8-9.
