Softball Drops Two in Doubleheader vs. Minnesota State: 2-3 and 3-7

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University softball team matched up against Minnesota State University this afternoon in an NSIC conference doubleheader. The games were held on the Huskies home playing grounds at Selke Field for the first time this season. The doubleheader took place at 1 and 3 p.m.
St. Cloud State dropped both games in the doubleheader against the Mavericks, falling 2-3 in game one and 3-7 in game two.
The St. Cloud State seniors were honored in between games today. Jordan Grell, Mikayla Hogan, Kelly Olson, Danielle Rahn and Nicole Steinle were honored for their accomplishments during their years as members of the St. Cloud State softball team under Head Coach Paula U'Ren. Jackie Manrique was also honored for her contributions as she plans to graduate after three years of play for the Huskies.
The Huskies are now 27-22 overall, and 12-10 in the NSIC. Minnesota State now stands at 34-10 overall, 19-5 in conference action. St. Cloud State will return to play tomorrow as they host Concordia University, St. Paul in a doubleheader at Selke Field scheduled to kick off at noon.
Game One vs. MSU Recap:
Both teams executed extremely well on the defensive end to resut in a scoreless first five innings. The Mavericks were the first to put a run on the board and they did so in the top of the sixth as they combined for one run on two hits and left two on base. The Huskies responded in the bottom of the sixth. Kelly Olson (Oak Grove) led off with a double to the center field wall. Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) followed by drawing a walk and Kelsie Fitch (Carver) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Colo.) stepped up to the plate with two outs and two runners in scoring position and crushed a two-RBI double to left center to put the Huskies up 2-1.
In the top of the seventh, Minnesota State put together two runs on two hits and left one runner on base to take a 3-2 lead. The Huskies were unable to string together any more runs and lost the battle to the Mavericks with a final score of 2-3.
Kelly Olson, Jordan Grell (Moville, Iowa), Nicole Steinle, and Marie Imholte (St. Cloud) each finished with one hit in game one.
Overall the Huskies scored two runs on four hits and committed one error.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound and pitched the complete seven innings. Franks allowed just five hits, walked three batters and struck out five. Franks now holds a 19-12 overall record on the mound this season.
Game Two vs. MSU Recap:
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead in game two as Mikayla Hogan hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first to give the Huskies a 2-0 advantage over the Mavericks. Minnesota State was scoreless until the top of the third when they scored one run on back-to-back doubles by Klein and Morris.
The Huskies held their lead at 2-1 until the top of the fifth when Mankato was able to put together another run to tie the game at 2-2. In the sixth inning, the Mavericks combined for five runs on two hits aided by two Husky errors to go up 7-2. The Huskies were able to get back one run as Kelsie Fitch hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Hogan. The Huskies fell to the Mavericks with a final score of 3-7.
The Huskies scored three runs on four hits and committed two errors. Minnesota State scored seven runs on nine hits and committed no errors.
Kelsie Fitched had two hits in game two and one RBI. Mikayla Hogan and Megan Lehnen (Burnsville) each collected one hit. Hogan finished with a team-high two RBI's.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo.) started and pitched five innings for the Huskies. Merritt allowed eight hits, walked three and struck out two. Merritt was relieved by Kelly Franks in the sixth inning. Franks pitched one inning before being relieved by Jackie Manrique (Chicago, Ill.). Manrique allowed no hits, no runs and no walks as she retired three straight in the seventh.
