SCSU Softball Defeats USF Cougars 10-5 and 2-1

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The Huskies matched up against the University of Sioux Falls Cougars this afternoon in an NSIC conference doubleheader. The games took place in the Husky Stadium Dome and kicked off at 2 p.m.
St. Cloud State defeated the Cougars 10-5 in game one and 2-1 in game two.
The Huskies are now 19-14 overall, 4-2 in the NSIC and will resume conference action tomorrow (Sunday, April 6) . The Huskies will match up against Southwest Minnesota State in an NSIC doubleheader in the dome. The games are scheduled to take place at 3 and 5 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
Game One vs. USF Recap:
The Huskies offense could not be tamed in game one. St. Cloud State combined for ten runs on 17 hits to defeat Sioux Falls in seven innings. The Huskies scored nine of those runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to go up 10-0 before the Cougars got on the board in the top of the fifth.
Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) and Taylor Thomas (Fontana, Calif.) each posted three hits in the game. Thomas also recorded a team-high three RBI's.
Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.), Kelsie Fitch (Carver), Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Megan Lehnen each had two hits in the contest.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) was credited with the win as she started and pitched seven innings. Franks recorded 11 strikeouts, eight walks and allowed just two hits. Franks now holds a 14-7 record this season.
Game Two vs. USF Recap:
The Huskies offense was slow to start in game two as Sioux Fall's starting pitcher Amanda Walters had a perfect game going until the bottom of the seventh. The Cougars scored one run in the top of the first and the score remained 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh with the game on the line, Breana Canova led off the inning with a base hit to left. Stephanie Roan (St. Charles, Ill.) followed up with a sacrifice bunt to advance Canova to second. Mikayla Hogan singled to left, advanced to second on a fielding error by left field and reached third on the throw as Breana Canova scored at home to tie the game 1-1. With Hogan on third base, Jordan Grell (Moville, Iowa) stepped to the plate. Hogan took off for home on a passed ball and the Huskies defeated the Cougars 2-1 to grab their fourth straight victory.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo) started on the mound for the Huskies and pitched seven complete innings to earn the win. Merritt allowed just sixt hits, walked three and struck out two. Merritt now holds a 5-7 record on the mound this season.
