Husky Softball Splits in Doubleheader vs. Southwest

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The Huskies matched up against Southwest Minnesota State University this evening in an NSIC conference doubleheader. The games took place in the Husky Stadium Dome and kicked off at 3 p.m.
St. Cloud State was defeated by Southwest 5-7 in game one, and took down the Mustangs 13-7 in game two.
The Huskies are now 20-15 overall, and 5-3 in the NSIC. The Mustangs now stand at 11-13 overall, 4-8 in conference action. St. Cloud State will return to action on Wednesday, April 10 as they host Minnesota, Crookston in a week day doubleheader set to kick off at 11 a.m.
Game One vs. SMSU Recap:
The Huskies held a 5-3 lead heading into the seventh inning, but couldn't hold on as the Mustangs late efforts allowed them to score four runs to go up 7-5 to end the game. St. Cloud State combined for five runs on ten hits and two errors. Southwest Minnesota State finished with seven runs on six hits and no errors.
Four Husky players finished with multiple hits in game one. Breana Canova (Riverside, Calif.), Mikayla Hogan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Jordan Grell (Moville, Iowa) and Kelly Olson (Oak Grove) each finished with two hits. Canova had a team-high two RBI's.
Kelly Franks (Stevens Point, Wis.) started on the mound and pitched the complete seven innings. Franks recorded 10 strikeouts, five walks and allowed six hits. Franks now holds a 14-8 record this season.
Game Two vs. SMSU Recap:
St. Cloud State's bats got hot in game two as the team combined for 13 runs on 13 hits. The Huskies committed four errors in the game.
Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Colo.) had a team-high three hits in game two. Steinle went three for four with two RBI's.
Mikayla Hogan, Jordan Grell, and Kelsie Fitch (Carver) each added two hits in the game. Fitch finished with a team-high four RBI's as she doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the first to clear the bases and singled to right center in the bottom of the second to score another runner.
Kendra Merritt (Fort Lupton, Colo) started on the mound for the Huskies and pitched seven complete innings to earn the win. Merritt allowed eight hits, walked three and struck out two. Merritt now holds a 6-7 record on the mound this season.
