St. Cloud State Advances in Regional with 11-2 Victory

Mankato, Minn. - The number five seed St. Cloud State University baseball team advanced in the winners' bracket of the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region tournament on Thursday, May 16 with a convincing 11-2 victory over number two seed Central Missouri (35-12) at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato, Minn.
The victory moves the Huskies' record to 35-9 and it sets up second day match up with number three seed Southern Arkansas at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato at 7 p.m. Southern Arkansas scored a 6-1 win over number four seed Missouri Western in the other first round game on May 16. The evening was completed with Minnesota State charting a 1-0 win over Missouri Southern in the bottom of the 14th inning.
The Huskies brought home the victory thanks to a three-run third inning that was keyed by third baseman Sean Borman's three-run double in the third inning that gave the Huskies an early 3-0 lead.
The Mules got back into the action when they posted a run in the fifth inning and one in the sixth inning off of Husky starter senior Scott Lieser. Those runs proved to be all the offense that Central Missouri could muster as Lieser capped them with a six-hit effort that included two strikeouts and only two runs allowed.
The victory was Lieser's 10th of the season and his 32nd as a Husky, which sets a new team career mark for most victories. He moves ahead of Logan Birr, who had 31 wins from 2009 to 2012. Lieser's 10 wins in 2013 also ties a team record for most wins in a season. Kyle Fischer has 10 wins in 2013 and Birr had 10 wins in 2012.
The Huskies put the game to rest in the eighth inning by scoring five runs to make it 8-2. Hits by Travis Cariveau, Travis Enger, Phil Imholte and Eric Loxtercamp provided the catalyst for the big Husky rally.
SCSU sealed the deal in the ninth inning with a three-run homer by Borman, which was his fourth of the season. He ended the game with two runs, two hits and six RBIs. Cariveau, Enger and Loxtercamp also had two hits apiece in the contest as the Huskies outhit the Mules 12-6.
"This was a great way to start the NCAA regional," coach Pat Dolan said. "Scott Lieser came through with another quality start for us and our offense really got going in the third inning with that big hit by Sean Borman. Central Missouri is a very good team, so I was happy to see us shut them down with our defense and then ice the game with those runs late in the game."
SCSU is now 12-10 all-time in NCAA tournament action since 1971, and the Huskies are 2-0 in play against Central Missouri in tournament play.
