9/14/2013 10:34:00 PM | Football
The winning touchdown capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive for the Huskies after Winona State had scored twice in the fourth quarter to take a 26-21 lead with four minutes remaining.
The Huskies improved to 2-0 on the season while Winona State dropped to 0-2. St. Cloud State travels to Concordia-St. Paul next Saturday for another NSIC match-up.
Klaphake broke the school record for all-purpose yardage going over the 10,000 yard mark as he completed 20 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 40 yards and a touchdown. He has 10,250 career all-purpose yards breaking the record of 9,997 yards held by Keith Heckendorf (2000-03).
Klaphake's main targets were seniors Damon Treat (Fairfield, Calif.) and Renard Robinson (Bloomington) who caught four passes each. Treat went over the 100-yard receiving mark for the second straight game, finishing with 127 yards and one touchdown. He also returned five kicks for 100 yards and three punts for 21 yards.
In two games this season Treat has 256 receiving yards which surpasses his season total for all of last year and is only second to his 377 receiving yards during the 2011 season. He has 972 career receiving yards and would become the 17th receiver in school history to reach the 1,000 yard mark.
Senior runningback Michael Walker (Walworth, Wis.) rushed for 47 yards and one touchdown, scoring on a three-yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the Huskies ahead 21-14.
Another senior Husky, defensive back Jack Moro (Brookfield, Wis.) collected his first interception of the season and 15th of his career to move within four picks of tying the school record of 19 held by Dan Neubauer since 1980. Moro had a team high ten
tackles in the game.
Winona State quarterback Jack Nelson, a true freshman, completed 16 passes for 228 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Josh Mikes has two catches for a team high 74 yards and one touchdowns. Paul Preston collected 66 yards rushing.
The Warrior defense was led by Morgan Weaver with 11 tackles. Winona State posted 10 tackles for loss and three sacks.
St. Cloud State finished the game with 418 yards of total offense and gave up 354 yards to the Warriors.
