Huskies Fall in WCHA Playoff Opener to #1 Minnesota, 4-1

Minneapolis, Minn. – St. Cloud State women's hockey kicked off the first round of the WCHA playoffs Friday night from Ridder Arena as they took on the #1 Minnesota Golden Gophers. Minnesota would take game one of series by a final score of 4-1.
The first period was a scoreless game as defenses were strong on both sides of the ice. St. Cloud and Minnesota ended the period with shots even at eight each.
Coming out in the second period the Gophers got the game going as they took a 1-0 lead just 25 seconds into the period. Scoring for Minnesota was Maryanne Menefee from Meghan Lorence and Hannah Brandt. The Gophers continued to extend their lead in the second with back-to-back power-play goals at the 14:25 mark and the 17:30 mark for a 3-0 lead.
St. Cloud would come back though shortening the Gophers lead at the 18:02 mark of the second period. It was senior Julia Gilbert firing one into the back to the net making it a 3-1 game. Assists on the goal were credited to Molli Mott and Cari Coen for an all senior goal.
Minnesota sealed a 4-1 victory over St. Cloud at the 3:18 mark of the third period on an even-strength goal by Rachel Ramsey.
Earning her 24th start of the season and goalie of record for St. Cloud was junior Julie Friend recording 39 saves, while the Gophers' Amanda Leveille tallied 16 saves for the win. Friend moves her season record to 3-17-4.
St. Cloud State (4-26-5, 3-21-4-2 WCHA) and #1 Minnesota (33-1-1, 26-1-1-0 WCHA) will be back in action on Saturday afternoon for game two of a best of three series. Game time is set for 4:07 p.m. from Ridder Arena.
