Coach Pat Dolan earns his 500th career win with the sweep over the Golden Bears.
Minnetonka, Minn. – St. Cloud State baseball was on the road Saturday for two of their four games against Concordia-St. Paul in their second weekend of NSIC play. The Huskies shutout the Golden Bears in both games winning 5-0 and 11-0. With the sweep head coach Pat Dolan earns his 500th career win.
In game one, the Huskies took the first lead of the game in the second inning posting two runs on four hits. Garrett Fischer and Karl Sorensen started the inning with back-to-back singles to centerfield and with one out Zak Hoffman hit a two RBI single through the left side for the 2-0 lead.
Scoring would go stagnant until the top of the seventh inning when the Huskies sealed a 5-0 victory off three hits and two Golden Bear errors. Leading the Huskies at the plate was Eric Loxtercamp as he went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Pitching a complete seven inning game on the mound for St. Cloud was senior Kyle Fischer as he allowed only two hits and struck out nine. Fischer moves his record to 4-1 on the season with the win.
Game two, the Huskies started right away taking a 1-0 lead over the Golden Bears in the top of the first inning. Michael Jurgella hit a two-out solo home run over the left field fence for the lead. St. Cloud would move their lead in the fifth inning as they put-up one run on a sacrifice fly by Jurgella scoring Loxtercamp from third for a 2-0 game.
The Huskies really got the bats going in the seventh extending their lead 6-0. Back-to-back singles by Jurgella for one run and Zach Hoffmann for two runs got the scoring going. SCSU's final run of the inning came off a sacrifice fly out to left field by Travis Enger. They would continue moving their lead as they recorded three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth for a final score of 11-0. Brandon Arnold had the big hit of the eighth with a two-RBI triple down the left field line.
On the mound pitching all nine innings for the Huskies in game two was Corey Fitzgerald allowing only five hits and struck out five. With the win Fitzgerald moves his season record to a perfect 3-0. The Huskies ended the game recording a total 21 hits.
The Huskies (15-4, 4-1 NSIC) and Concordia-St. Paul (10-4, 2-2 NSIC) will be back in action on Sunday for another doubleheader with the first pitch set for 12 p.m. from Veterans Field at Minnetonka High School.
