Sioux Falls, S.D. - St. Cloud State baseball was on the road Wednesday afternoon as they took on Augustana College in an NSIC doubleheader. The Huskies fell in both games to the Vikings as they earned the sweep, 2-1 and 6-5.
In game one, Augustana took an early lead over the Huskies in the second and held onto a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth when they extended their lead 2-0. St. Cloud brought the game within one as junior Michael Jurgella hit a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the seventh inning for a 2-1 game. That was all the Huskies could get as they were held off by Augustana.
On the mound for St. Cloud in game one was senior Kyle Fischer pitching six innings of work and striking out six. Fischer moves his record to 6-3 on the season with the loss. Jurgella led the team at the plate as he went 2-for-3 and one RBI.
Game two started the same with the Vikings taking a 1-0 lead in the first but then the Huskies would come back in the top of the second to make it a 1-1 game. It was sophomore Zak Hoffman hitting a solo home run to left field to tie the game up.
Augie came back in the bottom half of the second to regain the lead 2-1 scoring off a double through the left side. The Huskies were then able to get some action going scoring one run each in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings for a 4-2 lead. A sacrifice fly put up the run in the fourth, a RBI single by Brandon Arnold took the lead in the fifth and in the sixth it was Zach Hoffmann with a solo shot over the left field fence.
The Vikings would post four runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-4 lead. In the top of the eighth, St. Cloud was looking to make a run for it as they started the inning with another home run by Jurgella for his second of the day. The Huskies fell short though as they fell 6-5.
Pitcher of record and putting in seven innings of work and striking out seven on the mound was senior Corey Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald is now 6-2 on the season. Coming in as relief was sophomore Reese Gregory for one inning of work going three-up and three-down.
St. Cloud (31-12, 20-9 NSIC) will be back in action this weekend as they play host to the University of Mary. For dates, times, and locations of this weekend's series check our website at www.scsuhuskies.com.
