SCSU Baseball Drops 7-5 Decision in NSIC Tournament

A three-run rally by the St. Cloud State University baseball team in the top of the seventh was offset by back-to-back homers by Augustana in the bottom of the seventh innings, as the Huskies lost a 7-5 decision in the second round of action in the 2014 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships on Thursday, May 8 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Huskies trailed 4-2 heading into the top of the seventh before a two-out rally produced three runs to give the Huskies a brief 5-4 lead. Â Junior Mike Jurgella blasted a two RBI single to score teammates Eric Loxtercamp and Kyle Lieser. Â A double steal on the next at bat moved Jurgella to second base and it allowed Brandon Arnold to swipe home plate and give the Huskies a one run lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Augie iced the contest with back-to-back home runs by Alex Fink and Jack Goihl that made the final tally 7-5.
SCSU opened the contest in the first inning with a sacrifice fly by Jurgella that scored Loxtercamp. Â In the bottom of the first, Augustana scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. The Vikings added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to push its lead to 4-1. Â SCSU's offense got back on track in the top of the sixth with a single by Loxtercamp. Â He later scored on an RBI single by Garrett Fischer that made the score 4-2 heading into the top of the seventh.
Loxtercamp was impressive at the plate for SCSU in the contest with four hits and three runs scored, while Jurgella added three RBIs and one hit and Garrett Fischer posted two hits in the contest. Â SCSU outhit the Vikings 10-9 in the contest but the Huskies were also the victims of five errors in the game on defense.
On the mound, Kyle Fischer (6-4) was the pitcher of record for the Huskies with six strikeouts and nine hits allowed in 7.0 innings of work. Â Reese Gregory completed the last inning for the Huskies and issued one strikeout. Â Derek Quame was the winning pitcher in relief for AC, while Tony Gau started the game and went 6.2 innings with eight hits allowed. Â
SCSU will now advance in the double elimination tournament to play Minnesota State University, Mankato tonight at 7 p.m. under the lights at Augustana's Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. Â Both SCSU and MSU bring 1-1 tournament records into the game. Â The winner will advance to the next round of NSIC playoff action on Friday, May 9 in Sioux Falls, while the losing team will be finished in tournament play.
In other NSIC tournament action on May 8, Wayne State scored a 5-4 win in extra-innings against Winona State. Â The Warriors will now advance to play Southwest Minnesota State tonight at 7 p.m., while Wayne State will play Augustana at Noon on Friday, May 9 on Ronken Field.
