#2 St. Cloud State baseball stays atop NSIC with wins over Mary

The #2 St. Cloud State University baseball team (35-3, 19-3 NSIC) maintained its place atop the NSIC standings with a doubleheader sweep over the University of Mary (3-31, 1-19 NSIC) on Wednesday, April 15 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
In game one, the Huskies took command of the contest with three runs in the second inning and three runs in the third inning to gain a 6-0 lead. Â Home runs by Zak Hoffman in the second and the third innings provided five RBIs for the Huskies. Â In the fifth inning, Reese Gregory added a two-run blast to lead a four-run charge by the Huskies that made the final score 10-0.
On the mound, Garrett Harrison posted his fifth win of the season with the complete game effort. Â He chalked up three strikeouts in the game and allowed just six hits and no runs in the game. Â Harrison is now 5-0 on the season for the Huskies.
At the plate, Zak Hoffman was impressive with two homers, three runs, three hits and five RBIs. Â Gregory, Eric Loxtercamp, Karl Sorensen, Max Ditty and Kyle Lieser all had two hits apiece in the game as the Huskies outhit the Marauders 14-6 in the match.
Game two was a nail-biter that was solved in the bottom of the 10th inning with a game-winning RBI from Reese Gregory that handed the Huskies a 5-4 win.

Mary took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning before the Huskies rallied with a two-run homer in the sixth innning by Zak Hoffman. Â Mary made it 4-2 with a solo run in the top of the eighth inning before a two RBI triple by Mike Jurgella with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning tied the game and forced extra innings. Â Jurgella's tripled scored Brandon Arnold and Kyle Lieser on the play.
Gregory, who finished the game in relief and gained the win with 2.2 innings of work that included two strikeouts and one hit allowed, stepped into the spotlight in the bottom of the 10th with runners on first and second base and no outs. Â The inning began with a double by Arnold, which was followed by a walk by Sam Boisner. Â Gregory then came up and laced a single that brought home the winning run for the Huskies.
"These were two big wins for the Huskies to keep us in first place," SCSU coach Pat Dolan said. Â "Once again, we had contributions from all areas of our lineup and you can't say enough about the play of Mike Jurgella and Reese Gregory. Â Those guys are games and they really came up with some clutch hits to help us get the win in game two."
The Huskies will have the weekend off before returning to action on April 22 with a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader at home against Bemidji State University.
