Huskies set team record with four SHGs
The #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (27-8-1, 17-6-1 NCHC) completed its regular season schedule in top order with a 9-3 victory at Colorado College (6-27-1, 4-19-1 NCHC) on Saturday, March 5 at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
After a scoreless first period, the Huskies erupted with a four goal second period to take command of the contest. The period was highlighted by SCSU's special teams play that charted three shorthanded goals on the a 5:00 penalty kill.
The game's scoring saw CC gain a 1-0 lead with a goal by Mason Bergh on the power play at 3:41 of the second period. The Huskies stormed back with a shorthanded goal by Robby Jackson at 4:35 of the second. Ethan Prow had the solo assist on the play, which was his 26th assist of the year.
The second SHG of the period was then posted by Patrick Russell with assists from Kalle Kossila and Jimmy Schuldt, which made the tally 2-1.
Kossila chalked up the third SHG at 7:16 of the second period as Patrick Russell and Jon Lizotte each had assists on the play that made it 3-1.
Joey Benik added the eventual game winning goal at 15:28 of the second period with his team-leading 21st goal of the year as Kossila and Jimmy Murray each had assists on the play.
In the final period, CC's narrowed the gap to 4-2 with a goal by Cody Bradley at 1:46. The Huskies replied at 5:26 of the third with a goal by Judd Peterson on assists from Niklas Nevalainen and Ryan Papa.
The flood gates stayed opened for the Huskies as Murray added a goal at 8:00 of the third with assists from Benik and Kossila. Jackson made it 8-2 with his second goal of the night at 10:32 on assists from Blake Winiecki and Ben Storm.
SCSU's made it one of the the records as the Huskies scored their fourth SHG of the evening at 12:58 of the third period. Winiecki scored the record setter with assists from Lizotte and Nevalainen.
To cap the night, CC ended the scoring with a goal by Cole McCaskill at 18:42.
In the game, SCSU outshot CC by a 33-23 tally. The Huskies were 0-1 on the power play and CC was 1-4.
SCSU goalie Charlie Lindgren also broke a team record in the game as he won his 26th game of the year. He moves ahead of the previous recordholder Scott Meyer, who had 25 wins during the 2000-01 season. Lindgren collected 17 saves in the game and allowed two goals. Ramus Reijola finished the final 12:00 of the game for the Huskies with three saves to his credit. Derek Shatzer was the goalie of record for CC with 24 saves.
The Huskies will now open play in the first round of the NCHC playoffs with a best-of-three series against Western Michigan University at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. On March 11-13. Game time on March 11 is slated for 7:37 p.m. The games on March 12 (and if needed) March 13 will begin at 7:07 p.m.
