ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (22-23, 8-12 NSIC) saw its record dip below .500 for the first time in over a month with pair of loss to Bemidji State (23-15, 6-9 NSIC) on Wednesday, April 13, at Selke Field. The Huskies lost the first game 3-2 and fell in the second one by a 4-3 margin.
Junior Megan Hedstrom (7-12) was tagged with the loss for SCSU after allowing all three runs in the complete game in the first game of the day. She also struck out five and allowed nine hits. Jenna Massingill (7-6) earned the victory in allowing four hits, two runs in her seven innings worked. She also struck out nine and didn't walk a batter.
The Huskies made their first hit of the first game count as junior Alyssa Coletto launched her third home run to give SCSU a 1-0 lead.
The game remained 1-0 Huskies until the sixth inning when Kelsey McAllister hit her ninth home run of the season to tie the contest up at one all.
The Beavers again used the long ball to untie the game as Erin Deters led off with a pinch hit single and scored on Jessica Burlingame's first home run of the season to give BSU a 3-1 lead.
The Huskies would attempt to answer in the bottom of the frame and got to within a run on junior Jessica Goerger's ninth home run of the season to make the final score 3-2.
SCSU took the early 1-0 lead again in the second game. Junior Abby Bunnell reached base on an error, stole second and then third and scored on junior Rebecca Harps' sacrifice fly.
The game remained 1-0 SCSU until Bemidji State again used the long ball to take the lead back in the fifth inning. Brooke Phillips singled and Alayna Krejci walked ahead of the three-run home run from Jessica Yost. Lyndsey Peterson followed with a home run to make the margin 4-1.
The Huskies fought back to make it a one-run game in the sixth inning. Hedstrom singled and was followed by a single from senior Tricia DeBoer. Coletto was then able to push a single just out of the reach of the shortstop to score Hedstrom. Sophomore Veronica Wold then grounded out to score DeBoer and make it a 4-3 game. That was as close as SCSU could get in defeat though.
Senior Senna Francesconi (10-9), who allowed all four runs in 4.1 innings pitched with six strikeouts, took the loss. Freshman Kate Kopeck threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Yost (14-6) started and allowed three runs (two earned) with no walks and eight strikeouts to earn the complete game victory.
St. Cloud State continues the home stand and hosts conference front runner Augustana for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16, beginning at noon at Selke Field.
