Huskies Fall in the First Game 9-2 and Wins Second Contest 10-5 Over the Vikings
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (23-24, 9-13 NSIC) rallied in the second game of its doubleheader to split the two games with Augustana (31-12,18-3 NSIC) on Saturday, April 16, at Selke Field. The Huskies were downed in the first game by a 9-2 margin, but secured the 10-5 victory in the second game.
Senior Senna Francesconi (11-9) earned the victory for the Huskies in the second game in throwing her ninth complete game of the season. She allowed five runs (four earned) while registering five strikeouts. Augustana University's Karlee Koopman (11-6) was hit hard in allowing five earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched in the circle.
Augustana scored first in the second game with a pair of runs in the first inning driven in on Sarah Kennedy and Shannon Petersen RBI singles.
The Huskies put up a five-spot in the bottom of the second inning. Megan Larkin, who was celebrated her Senior Day today, singled and went to second on senior Taige Puetz's bunt single. After a one-out sacrifice bunt from sophomore Libby Bingham moved each runner up a base, junior Abby Bunnell walked to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Larkin to scamper home with the team's first run. After a Bunnell stolen base, junior Rebecca Harps drilled a double to plate a pair of runs. Fellow junior Jessica Goerger followed with a home run to right field to score Harps and give SCSU a 5-2 advantage. It was Goerger's 10th home run of the season.
Augustana drew to within a run in the top of the third inning on Petersen's two-run home run and then ultimately tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on Kennedy's RBI single.
SCSU would again rally though and scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Goerger singled and scored just ahead of Alyssa Coletto's fourth home run of the season. Junior Megan Hedstrom then singled and scored on Puetz's double.
The Huskies used a strong defensive play to keep momentum going in the top of the sixth inning. Abby Chandler singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then attempted to score on a single by Kennedy to right field. Harps came up with the ball quickly and gunned out Chandler at the plate to keep SCSU in the lead at 8-5.
SCSU scored its final two runs of the game in the bottom of the frame. Senior Tricia DeBoer singled, took second on a pass ball and scored on Hedstrom's single. Hedstrom, who had taken second on the throw home, moved to third on ground and scored on Bingham's double.
Hedstrom (7-13) was tagged with the loss in the day's opener for SCSU. She allowed five runs (four earned) in four innings worked. Freshman Kate Kopeck threw three innings of relief with four runs allowed. The Vikings Carley Pickett (19-6) surrendered two runs in throwing a complete game.
Augustana scored two runs in the first inning and added another tally in the second inning.
SCSU got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second. Coletto doubled and scored on Hedstrom's single up the middle.
The Vikings scored two more runs in the fifth inning with Kennedy's home run scoring the first tally and a wild pitch allowing Maggie Kadrick to score.
SCSU cut the deficit to three, 5-2, in the bottom of the frame on Bingham's second home run of the season.
AU completed its scoring with four runs in the top of the seventh inning with the big blow being a three-run home run from Maddie Merriam.
St. Cloud State continues the home stand and hosts Wayne State College (23-20, 17-5 NSIC) in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Selke Field. The team will honor senior Tricia DeBoer before the first game with a brief presentation.
