
St. Cloud State Softball Mashes Six Home Runs in Sweep of MSU Moorhead, Outscores Dragons 21-1 in Twinbill

Weiss ties single game home run record in game one, Huskies reach 40-win mark for ninth time in program history
MOORHEAD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Softball (40-12, 22-4 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) hit six home runs and outscored MSU Moorhead (9-40, 7-19 NSIC) 21-1 in its doubleheader sweep on Sunday at the Nemzek Softball Field in Moorhead. The Huskies won game one 7-1 before shutting out MSUM 14-0 in game two in five innings.
Junior catcher/infielder Bethany Weiss (Forest Lake, Minn.) became the second player in as many days and the fourth total this season to tie the school record for home runs in game with two, which she did in game one of the doubleheader. The Huskies hit nine home runs in four games this weekend and have hit 13 in their last six games.
SCSU earned its ninth overall and third consecutive series sweep of Northern Sun play, while also reaching the 40-win mark for just the ninth time (second straight season) in the program's 57-year history.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE 7, MSU MOORHEAD 1
Weiss gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the first half inning of play when she hit her first home run of the game, a solo shot to center field. She added her second RBI of the game in the third with an RBI-single to give SCSU a 2-0 lead.
The Huskies then went on to add five runs on six hits in the fifth to push its lead to 7-0. Freshman outfielder Rowan Jansen (St. Louis Park, Minn.) opened the inning as a pinch hitter with an inside-the-park home run down the right field line on the first pitch she saw. Weiss then hit her second and record-tying home run, a two-run blast to left field. Redshirt sophomore utility Kaylee Collins (Lakeville, Minn.) and junior outfielder Hannah Harms (Bartlett, Ill.) closed out the inning with back-to-back RBI-singles.
Despite conceding a run with two outs in the last half inning, senior pitcher Justyce Porter (Kent, Wash.) was solid, scattering five hits over a seven-inning complete game effort.

- Porter notched her 14th win and 10th complete game of the season which both rank second on the team.
- Jansen's inside-the-park home run was her first career extra base hit.
- Collins tallied her sixth multi-hit game of the season and hit her first triple of the season. She is on a season-best five game on-base streak.
- Roe hit her eighth double of the season and extended her hitting and on-base streaks to five games.
- Junior infielder Brooke Holmes (Savage, Minn.) recorded a single to extend her on-base streak to 10 games.
- Redshirt junior infielder Grace Frechette (Forest Lake, Minn.) had her team-best 17 game on-base streak snapped.
GAME TWO: ST. CLOUD STATE 14, MSU MOORHEAD 0 (5 INN.)
SCSU scored its first two runs in the second inning with an RBI-single from junior infielder Kennedy Palmer (Ankeny, Iowa) and an RBI-triple from Holmes. The Huskies added six more runs on five hits in the fourth with the first four coming in consecutive at-bats with an RBI bunt single from Holmes, an RBI fielder's choice for Frechette, a sacrifice fly from Weiss and an RBI-double from Honeycutt. Later in the inning, Harms hit a two-RBI single to make the score 8-0.
The remainder of the Huskies six runs were scored on home runs in the fifth inning. Holmes delivered a leadoff home run, Honeycutt launched a two-run shot and junior outfielder Kurstyn Patnode (Becker, Minn.) hit her first career home run, a three-run blast to left field.
In the circle, senior pitcher Macey Clark (Winneconne, Wis.) provided another excellent outing, tossing a 5.0 inning shutout. She allowed just two hits, struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk.

It was her 10th multi-hit game of the season and became the fifth Husky with double-digit multi-hit games. It was also her 10th multi-RBI game of the season (second on the team) and sixth with 3+ (tied for the most on the team).
- Patnode hit her first double as a Husky and her first career home run. It was her second multi-hit game of the season, second multi-RBI game and first with 3+.
- Clark recorded her 18th win, 15th complete game and seventh shutout which all lead the team. She posted her fifth shutout in her last seven starts and lowered her season ERA to 1.27, WHIP to 0.88 and opponents' batting average to .169.
- Palmer notched her ninth multi-hit game.
- Needham tallied her first hit since March 6 against Holy Family (Pa.) at the Space Coast Spring Games.
- Harms registered her third multi-RBI game of the season.
- Weiss recorded a hit to improve her hitting and on-base streaks to seven games.
- Roe had her hitting and on-base streaks of five games snapped.
- Collins extended her season-best on-base streak to six games.
UP NEXT
The Huskies return home for their final weekend of regular season play next weekend against Minnesota Duluth (29-20, 14-12 NSIC) and Bemidji State (10-39, 4-22 NSIC). The Huskies take on the Bulldogs on Saturday and Bemidji State on Sunday for Senior Day (the team's three seniors and BSU's seniors will be honored in between games).
