Softball Drops Two Close Contests to Wayne State College

Huskies Fall in the First Game 6-5 and Drop Second Contest 5-3 in 11 innings
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (23-26, 9-15 NSIC) lost a pair of close contests to Wayne State College (25-20, 19-5 NSIC) on Sunday, April 17, at Selke Field. SCSU lost the first game by a 6-5 margin and dropped the second contest by a 5-3 score in 11 innings.
Senior Senna Francesconi (11-10) was the tough luck loser in the second game in allowing five runs in 10.1 innings pitched with one walk and six strikeouts. She ended up throwing 162 pitches in the game. Cassy Miller (19-13) won both games of the doubleheader for Wayne State. In the second game, she threw 7.2 scoreless innings of relief with eight strikeouts. In the first game of the afternoon she had a complete game with five runs allowed and nine strikeouts. Junior Megan Hedstrom (7-14) lost the first game for SCSU in going three innings with three runs allowed. Freshman Kate Kopeck allowed three runs in her four innings of relief.
Wayne State took the early 2-0 lead in game two in the opening inning. Abbie Hix and Sam O'Brien both drove in runs in the opening frame for the Wildcats.
SCSU cut the deficit in half with a run in the second inning. Hedstrom reached on a fielder's choice and scored on senior Taige Puetz's RBI single.
The Huskies took their first lead of the afternoon with two runs in the fourth inning. Junior Jessica Goerger singled to start the frame. Junior Brianne Hightshoe was inserted to run for Goerger and moved to second on a hit by pitch. Hedstrom would follow with a double to score Hightshoe. Senior Tricia DeBoer, who had singled earlier in the frame, scored on Puetz's sacrifice fly.
The 3-2 SCSU lead held until the top of the seventh when the Wildcats were able to tie the contest on O'Brien's two-out base hit.
The game remained knotted at three until the top of the 11thh inning when Katelyn Wobken singled in Rachel Shumaker. Later in the frame Hix plated Lexie Loos with an RBI ground out for a key insurance run in the eventual 5-3 victory.
The first game got very exciting at the end as Goerger hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to get the Huskies to within a run at 6-5.
The Wildcats scored first in the first game with three runs in the third inning on Emily Chandler's two-RBI single and O'Brien's RBI ground out.
WSC added two runs to the advantage with a pair of runs in the fifth inning on Chandler's two-run home run to center field.
The Huskies broke through for their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on Coletto's fifth home run of the season. Coletto has hit three home runs in her last six games.
Wayne State ended up adding a key insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on a Hix sacrifice fly to plate Loos and make the score 6-1.
In the bottom of the frame, Puetz singled up the middle and moved to second on a base hit by junior Abby Bunnell. A single from junior Rebecca Harps loaded the bases just before Goerger hit her 11th home run of the season with two out. That was as close as SCSU would get in the 6-5 defeat though.
St. Cloud State completes the home season with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against MSU Moorhead on Wednesday, April 20 at Selke Field.
