Hedstrom Leads Softball To Split Doubleheader Against MSU Moorhead

Huskies Fall in the First Game 6-0 and Wins the Second Contest 4-1
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State junior softball player Megan Hedstrom drove in two runs and only allowed one tally in a complete game to help lead the Huskies (24-27, 10-16 NSIC) to a split doubleheader against MSU Moorhead (15-27, 8-18 NSIC) on Wednesday, April 20, at Selke Field.
Hedstrom (8-14) started the second game in the circle for SCSU and only surrendered one run without walking a batter in throwing her eighth complete game of the season. She also struck out five and allowed eight hits. Kristen Norby (7-12) was tagged with the loss in the nightcap in allowing four runs in her two innings in the circle.
Hedstrom, a junior from Palatine, Ill., also provided the offense with three hits and pair of RBIs including her second home run of the season.
The Huskies offense, after getting shutout in the opener, got things rolling early in the second game with three runs in the first inning. Junior Rebecca Harps doubled and raced home with the game's first run on a double from junior Alyssa Coletto. Hedstrom then followed with a two-run shot to give herself and the Huskies a 3-0 advantage.
SCSU added on a tally in the second inning as junior Abby Bunnell recorded a two-out single, then stole second before racing home on a double from Harps.
MSU Moorhead scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning on Norby's fifth home run of the season. It was her second home run of the day.
Morgan Nybo, who also threw four scoreless innings in the second game, started the day's opener and had a two-hit complete game shutout with five strikeouts. Nybo also picked up three hits and four RBIs to lead the offense for the Dragons.
MSU Moorhead jumped all over the Huskies from the opening inning with two runs in the first on a Kristy Bruni sacrifice fly and a Nybo two-out RBI single.
The Dragons added a pair of runs to the lead in the third inning on a Nybo two-out RBI single.
MSUM finished up their scoring with two more runs in the fifth inning with Norby hitting a home run and Nybo picking up an RBI on an infield single.
The Huskies' singles in the first game came from Coletto and senior Megan Larkin.
Senior Senna Francesconi (11-11) allowed six runs (five earned) in her five innings with three walks and five strikeouts. Freshman Kate Kopeck had two scoreless innings in relief for SCSU.
St. Cloud State completes the regular season on the road and travels to the University of Mary for a pair of games on Saturday, April 23, starting at 1 p.m. The team then continues the road swing and travels to Minot State on Sunday, April 24, for a doubleheader against the Beavers starting at noon at Herb Parker Stadium.
