ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Cloud State softball team (25-28, 11-17 NSIC) won the first contest and then lost a late lead in the seventh inning in the second to split its doubleheader against the University of Mary (17-33, 11-17 NSIC) on Saturday, April 23, at UOM Softball Field. SCSU earned 3-1 first game victory, but fell in the second contest by a 5-2 margin.
In the first game, junior Megan Hedstrom (9-14) was strong in allowing one run on five hits in a complete game. She surrendered just one walk in throwing her ninth complete game of the season. Hedstrom has allowed a total of two runs in her last two starts in 14 innings pitched. Brieann Backles (5-12) took the loss although she allowed just one earned run in a complete game.
Both teams had five hits in the contest, but the University of Mary also committed three errors.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when SCSU plated a pair of runs. Junior Jessica Goerger reached on an error from the shortstop. She moved to second on a base hit from fellow junior Alyssa Coletto. A ground out moved both runners up a base. Senior Tricia DeBoer then followed with an infield single to score Goerger. A double steal from DeBoer and Coletto scored the second run of the game for SCSU.
The Huskies added a big insurance run to the lead in the top of the sixth inning with DeBoer driving in Coletto from second with a single.
The Marauders scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on an Ashley Gamboa single to score Lex Hubbard.
St. Cloud State held the lead for much of the second game, but a late rally capped off by grand slam from the Marauders' Shawnee Zink in the bottom of the seventh inning turned the tide quickly in the 5-2 loss. Alana Norman started the frame with a single. Demaree Rodriguez reached on an error. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base. Taylor Mendez was then intentionally walked to set up a force at any base. Zink followed with her grand slam to give UMary the win.
Senior Senna Francesconi started and went the first six innings with two runs allowed (one earned) before running into trouble in the seventh inning. Freshman Kate Kopeck (5-3) was inserted to pitch in relief and allowed three runs (two earned) in her 1/3 of an inning. Melanie Rodriguez (8-16) went the distance in allowing two runs on six hits for the Marauders.
SCSU started the scoring with a run in the first inning. Junior Abby Bunnell doubled to begin the game and scored on junior Rebecca Harps' single.
The Huskies added a tally in the fifth inning. Sophomore Veronica Wold doubled to left and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Libby Bingham. After Bunnell reached on a fielder's choice bunt, she intentionally caught herself in a run down to allow Wold to score from third with the team's second run.
Mary scored their first run in the sixth inning on a throwing error from the SCSU.
