Wins First Game 3-1 and Falls 3-2 in 11 innings in the Second
MINOT, N.D. – The St. Cloud State softball team (26-29, 12-17 NSIC) put up a good fight in splitting the program's doubleheader against Minot State (17-30, 6-23 NSIC) on the road in Minot, N.D. at Herb Parker Stadium. The program needed to win both contests in order to secure a bid into the 10-team NSIC Softball Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D. and succeeded in winning the first game by a 3-1 score, but then fell in the nightcap by a 3-2 score in 11 innings to have its season ended.
SCSU rallied in the first game after allowing an unearned run in the fourth inning on a Jasmine Grant single.
SCSU took the lead with two runs in the sixth inning. Junior Abby Bunnell was hit by a pitch with one out in the inning. Junior Rebecca Harps moved Bunnell to second with her base hit. A pass ball allowed both runners to move up a base. Junior Jessica Goerger then muscled a sacrifice fly to center to score Bunnell and tie the game one. Junior Alyssa Colleto followed with a single to center to score a racing Harps from second with the team's second run of the game and frame.
The Huskies added an insurance tally to the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Senior Tricia DeBoer roped a single to center and moved to second base on a sacrifice fly from fellow senior Taige Puetz. Freshman Jaiden Lund then came through with a clutch pinch hit double to score DeBoer with the team's third and final run in the 3-1 win.
Senior Senna Francesconi (12-11) was credited with the win after throwing 3.2 of scoreless relief work while scattering five hits and two walks. Junior Megan Hedstrom got the start for SCSU and allowed one unearned run in 3.1 innings thrown. Alyssa Cornejo (6-9) took the loss for the Beavers in allowed three runs (two earned) in a complete game.
The second game was a rollercoaster ride. Minot State again took the early lead in the fourth inning on Ashley Hill single.
The Huskies tied the game up in the top of the seventh inning on a pass ball that allowed freshman Samantha Boettcher to score.
The game remained knotted at one until the Huskies pulled ahead with a run in the 11th inning with Harps driving in freshman Morgan Emmans with her single.
The Beavers tied and then won the game in the bottom of the frame on pair of bases loaded walks. Cornejo drew the first to drive in Rachel Burnette and tie game at two. Just as it looked like SCSU was going to escape with a tied game, Lauren Cowden drew a two-out bases loaded walk to plate Isis Cabral with the third run of the game.
Hedstrom (9-15) took the loss for SCSU and allowed three walks and a run in her 1/3 of an inning. Francesconi pitched the first 10.1 innings for the Huskies and gave up two runs on eight hits.
The two games were the finals ones in the careers of SCSU seniors Megan Larkin, Tricia DeBoer, Senna Francesconi and Taige Puetz.
