St. Cloud State baseball sweeps Bemidji State on April 27

The St. Cloud State University baseball team (32-4, 17-4 NSIC) continued its run of success in 2016 with a two-game sweep at Bemidji State University (11-33, 8-20 NSIC) on Wednesday, April 27. In game one, the Huskies charted a 4-2 win and then returned in game two to gain an 11-2 victory over the Beavers.
The Huskies stayed in pace with the NSIC league leaders thanks to the victories. UMD currently sits atop the NSIC leaderboard with a 22-4 league record and Augustana is in second place at 19-4. Earlier in the day, SCSU gained the number one ranking in the first NCAA Division II Central Region poll.
SCSU gained a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one and then stretched its lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the third inning at BSU. In the fifth inning, the Huskies pushed its margin to 4-0 before BSU replied with two runs in the sixth inning to make the final 4-2. In the game, SCSU outhit the Beavers 9-6.
Sheldon Miks was the pitcher of record for SCSU with three strikeouts, five hits allowed and two runs allowed in 5.2 innings of work. Logan Spitzack earned his fourth save of the year with his relief work that include two strikeouts.
At the plate, SCSU's Reese Gregory had three hits, two RBIs and one run to charge the offense. Logan Swann also had three hits in the contest for the Huskies, while Zak Hoffman added an RBI.
In game two, the Huskies charged out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning to set the pace for the victory. SCSU extended its lead with two runs in the third and one run in the fourth inning before BSU broke the shutout with a run in the bottom of the fifth. To cap the day, SCSU and BSU both scored runs in the ninth inning to make the final 11-2.
At the plate, SCSU outhit BSU by a 13-5 margin. Hoffman added three hits (one homer and two doubles), two RBIs and three runs in the contest. Mathew Meyer, Brandon Arnold and Swann all had two hits in the game.
On the mound, SCSU used a total of 10 pitchers in the contest. Kevin Bolder started the game and allowed one hit and had four strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. Overall, SCSU allowed just two runs, five hits and had eight strikeouts in the game. The other SCSU pitchers to make apperances in the contest included Cal Giese, Dominic Austing, Miles Nablo, Bryan Rohde, David Kroger, Tyler Gentz, Kyle Boser, Matt Butler and Zach Siggelkow.
The Huskies will now return to action on April 30-May 1 for a pair of NSIC doubleheaders at Joe Faber Field against Northern State. The doubleheader on April 30 has been designated as Fan Appreciation Day at Joe Faber. A wide variety of fun fan events will take place at the game along with plenty of give-aways.
