St. Cloud State baseball splits doubleheader vs. NSU on Apr. 30

The St. Cloud State University baseball team (33-5, 18-5 NSIC) split a doubleheader against NSIC rival Northern State University (16-19, 9-13 NSIC) at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. on Saturday, April 30. In game one, the Huskies charted a 4-2 victory over the Wolves and then dropped a 12-5 decision in game two.
The two teams will complete the NSIC weekend in St. Cloud, Minn. with a Noon doubleheader at Joe Faber Field on Sunday, May 1. The game has been designated as Senior Day and the 2016 St. Cloud State University senior baseball players will be recognized during a special ceremony between the games on May 1. Tickets for the game can be purchased at the gate on game day. All SCSU students with a valid student ID card get into this game for FREE.
In game one on April 30, the Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning with RBI singles by Judd Davis and Brandon Arnold. The SCSU runs were tallied by Zach Metzger and Karl Sorensen. NSU replied with a run in the top of the fifth inning before the Huskies padded their lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning by Kyle Lieser, who scored on a double by Zach Hoffmann.
SCSU added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. A single by Davis advanced Jackson Goplen, who then scored on a throwing error to make it 4-1. NSU finished the game with one more run in the top of the seventh to complete the offense at 4-2.
Logan Spitzack was the pitcher of record in the contest with seven hits and one run allowed in 4.1 innings of work. Reese Gregory posted his first save of the season with 2.2 innings of work that featured two hits allowed and one run allowed.
At the plate, Brandon Arnold and Hoffmann each had two hits and one RBI in the game. Metzger also had two hits to help lead the SCSU offense in game one. SCSU outhit the Wolves 13-9 in the game.
In game two, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a homer by Zak Hoffman and then extended their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. NSU ignited its offense in the top of the seventh inning with five runs before Reese Gregory replied in the bottom of the seventh inning with his team leading 14th home run of the season. Of note, Hoffman now has nine home runs in 2016.
