Huskies split another NSIC doubleheader against Northern State

For the second consecutive day, the St. Cloud State University baseball team (34-6, 19-5 NSIC) split an NSIC doubleheader against Northern State University (17-20, 10-14 NSIC) on Sunday, May 1 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies charted a solid 7-0 win in game one on the strength of Cal Giese's complete game pitching performance that featured 12 strikeouts. In the second game of the day, SCSU lost a 6-2 decision against the Wolves.
In game one, the Huskies charged to a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Reese Gregory connected on a two-run homer into left field that scored Kyle Lieser. The home run was Gregory's 15th of the season, which tied the team record for most home runs that was also reached in 2015 by Zak Hoffman.
The Huskies added three more run in the fourth inning after Alex Naasz produced a two-run home that brought home Zach Metzger. The Huskies finished the inning with a run scored by Judd Davis on a single by Lieser.
Zach Hoffmann scored one more SCSU run in the fifth inning before SCSU capped the first game with a run in the sixth inning by Brandon Arnold, who stole second base and then advanced to home on a throwing error.
At the plate, Lieser had three hits and one RBI, while Zach Hoffmann had two hits. SCSU outhit the Wolves 11-7 on the first game. On defense, SCSU pitching was impressive as Cal Giese gained the complete game win for his sixth win of the year. He charted 12 strikeouts in the contest and allowed just seven hits and no runs.
In game two, Northern State score two runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Wolves added to that lead with another run in the fourth inning and then gained a 4-0 margin with one more run in the seventh inning. The Huskies rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning with a triple by Kyle Lieser that scored Judd Davis. Lieser was then brought home with an RBI by Gregory to make it 4-2.
NSU iced the contest in the top of the ninth with two more runs that ended the game at 6-2. NSU outhit the Huskies by a 10-7 margin in the game.
Ryan Diers was the pitcher of record in the contest with 2.0 innings of work, while Tyler Gentz (4.2 IP), Miles Nablo (1.2 IP) and David Kroger (0.2 IP) also provided relief work. Of note, the Huskies' Diers had six strikeouts and Gentz had five strikeouts in the game. Overall, SCSU ended the game with 13 strikeouts between its four pitchers. On the afternoon, SCSU's pitcher recorded an impressive 25 strikeouts in the two games.
At the plate, Karl Sorensen had two hits to pace the Huskies.
The Huskies will complete their regular season home schedule with an NSIC doubleheader against league leader Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday, May 4 at Joe Faber Field. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and fans can purchase tickets at the gate. All SCSU students with a valid ID card will get into the games for FREE!
