St. Cloud State baseball breaks record in 19-0 win vs. Upper Iowa

The #1 St. Cloud State University baseball team scored a historic 19-0 victory over NSIC rival Upper Iowa University in game one of a doubleheader at Joe Faber Field on April 9. The Huskies hit a school record nine home runs in the game to earn the victory. In game two of the doubleheader, the Huskies suffered their first loss of the season with a 3-1 setback against the Peacocks.
The Huskies dominated game one from the start with four runs in the first inning to gain a 4-0 lead. SCSU charted homers in the second inning by Karl Sorensen and Reese Gregory to add four more runs to its total.
In the fourth inning, Gregory belted his second home run of the game to start a three-home run streak that was followed in order by Zach Metzger and Alex Naasz with home runs to make it 12-0.
In the fifth inning, Zach Hoffmann homered and Naasz followed with his second round tripper of the day to make the total 17-0. To cap the first game, Cody Rutledge homered in the sixth inning to make it 18-0 and then Kyle Lieser broke the team record with another home run to make the final 19-0.
Of note, SCSU's previous record of eight home runs was set in 1990 against Southwest Minnesota State.
On the mound, Kevin Bolder gained his fourth win of the season with six strikeouts and three hits allowed over 5.0 innings. Kyle Boser and Matt Butler completed the game in relief for the Huskies.
The game marked SCSU's 23rd consecutive victory, which tied a team record for most consecutive wins that was set at the start of the 2015 season.
In game two, Upper Iowa's Tyus Adkins pitched a complete game victory for the Peacocks as he limited the Huskies to seven hits in the contest. Upper Iowa scored two runs in the second inning and then added one more run in the fifth to gain a 3-0 lead.
The Huskies lone run in the game was scored in the sixth inning by Karl Sorensen on an RBI by Reese Gregory. Zach Metzger had two hits in the contest to lead the Huskies at the plate in the game. This marked the first loss for SCSU since a defeat in the championship game of the NCAA Division II Central Regional tournament at Joe Faber Field in 2015 against Henderson State.
Cal Giese was the pitcher of record for SCSU in the game with 5.0 innings pitched, five strikeouts, seven hits allowed and three runs allowed. Logan Spitzack completed the game for SCSU with 4.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed and six strikeouts.
SCSU and UIU will complete their weekend series at Joe Faber Field with a Noon doubleheader on Sunday, April 10. Tickets for the game may be purchased at the gate. SCSU students with a valid SCSU student ID card will be admitted FREE to this doubleheader.
