
St. Cloud State Baseball sweeps Upper Iowa on April 10

On a wind-swept field in St. Cloud, the Huskies tallied an impressive seven home runs in the two games on April 10. Over the weekend, SCSU recorded 16 home runs in four games played against Upper Iowa and the Huskies compiled 47 runs and 57 hits in the weekend series against the Peacocks.
In game one. the Huskies gained control of the game early with three runs in the first inning and then pushed the lead to 4-0 with a solo run in the second inning. In the top of the third inning, Upper Iowa ignited for three runs before the Huskies rallied once more with six runs in the bottom of the third to gain a 10-4 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Upper Iowa came back with three runs in the fifth inning to make it 10-7. In the bottom of the sixth inning, SCSU padded its lead to 13-7 with three runs. In the top of the seventh, Upper Iowa added three more runs but reliever Sheldon Miks closed the door to gain his first save of the season.
SCSU's Tyler Gentz was the pitcher of record in the game with 4.1 innings of work. He had seven strikeouts in the game and allowed just five hits. Miles Nablo and David Kroger also pitched for the Huskies in the contest.
At the plate, Zak Hoffman, Reese Gregory and Judd Davis all had homers for the Huskies. Zach Hoffmann also had three hits and three runs, while Hoffman and Gregory each added three RBIs apiece in the game.
In game two, the Huskies posted a 2-0 lead in the second inning only to see UIU charge back to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the third inning. The Peacock's lead was shortlived as SCSU rallied with nine runs in the bottom of the third to gain an 11-4 lead.
The Huskies would go on to add one run in the fourth inning and two runs in the sixth to push its lead to 14-4. In the game, SCSU had 13 hits and was led at the plate by Gregory with four hits, four RBIs and three runs scored. In the game, Gregory had two home runs, while teammate Karl Sorensen also had two homers for SCSU. Sorensen ended his day with two hits, two runs and four RBIs. Of note, Gregory ended the weekend with five homers for SCSU.
Brandon Arnold added a triple in the victory along with two hits, two RBIs and two walks in the game for SCSU.
Dominic Austing started the game and pitched three innings before Ryan Diers pitched 1.0 inning of relief. Bryan Rohde gained the victory in relief with 2.0 innings of work that included four strikeouts and David Kroger had one inning of relief work to finish the game.
SCSU will continue its 2016 season on Wednesday, April 13 with a 1:30 p.m. twinbill at home against Concordia-St Paul. Tickets for the games at Joe Faber Field can be purchased at the gate.
