St. Cloud State drops 1-0 decision in 11 innings at NCAA Regional

The St. Cloud State University baseball team (42-9) suffered a 1-0 loss in 11 innings against Minnesota State University (34-16) in the opening day of action at the 2016 NCAA Division II Central Regional tournament on Thursday, May 19 in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies will continue play in the double-elimination tournament at Joe Faber Field against Missouri Western at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 20. Missouri Western opened its tournament play with a 15-0 loss to Arkansas Monticello in the second game of the day on May 19. The first game of the tournament saw Central Missouri chart a 3-1 victory over Southwest Oklahoma State on May 19. The final game of the day will feature Minnesota Duluth against Emporia State.
The second game of the day on May 20 will pit Southwest Oklahoma State against the loser of the UMD-Emporia game. The third game of the day will feature Minnesota State and Arkansas Monticello and the final game on May 20 will feature Central Missouri against the winner of the UMD-Emporia game.
Tournament play in the Central Regional will continue through Monday, May 23 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud. Tickets for the tournament are available at the gate on game day.
In a classic NCAA pitchers' battle, MSU's Dalton Roach crafted a completed game shutout. Over 11 innings, Roach had 12 strikeouts for the Mavericks and allowed just four hits. On the other side of the field, SCSU's Reese Gregory was impressive with 10.0 innings of work that limited MSU to just four hits while striking out six. The pitcher of record for SCSU was Logan Spitzack, who gave up the game's lone run in the 11th innning as MSU's Josh Wenzel scored the winning run.
Offensively, SCSU was paced by Gregory with two hits and Zach Hoffmann, who had a double and a single in the contest.
SCSU now owns an 17-15 record in NCAA postseason play. This marks the eighth time that SCSU has gained an NCAA tournament bid since 1971 and the sixth time SCSU has gained an NCAA bid since 2010.
