ATLANTA, Ga. – While the rest of his classmates are graduating from St. Cloud State University today, former SCSU defensive back Jordan Sefon is eagerly joining the workforce after inking a free agent tryout contract with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.
Sefon, from Richfield, Minn., is one of 27 players that will be in Atlanta's two-day rookie mini-camp in Flowery Branch, Ga. starting on Friday. He is among 22 players that signed a college free agent contract along with the five Falcons draft picks.
Sefon and the rest of the rookie class arrived at the Falcons headquarters on Thursday afternoon where they got settled into their dorms, got fitted for helmets and other equipment and received their IPads. Once everyone was settled, the Falcons coaching staff held team and positional meetings.
Today and tomorrow the team continues various meetings in the morning, along with walkthroughs, film sessions and treatments. Practices are held in the afternoon for two hours in a similar manner to off-season team activities.
Sefon ended his Huskies career having played in 47 games with 45 starts. He recorded 217 career tackles, 13 stops for loss, six interceptions, 24 pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Last season, he placed third on the team with 68 total tackles and second with his 48 solo stops, while tying for the team lead in pass breakups with six. He was selected All-NSIC four times in his career including a selection to the First Team as a junior. Sefon recorded a career-high 15 tackles in the team's victory over University of Mary last season. It was one two times that the 6'0" 198 pound cornerback reached double figures in tackles in a game in his career.
Sefon is the son of Annette Gazare and was mass communication major with an emphasis in advertising while a student at SCSU.
St. Cloud State football will open the 2016 season at home on Thursday, Sept. 1, against University of Sioux Falls at 6 p.m. at Husky Stadium. The Huskies play a total of five home games on the season including contests against Minnesota State Mankato (Sept. 17, 3 p.m.), University of Mary (Oct. 8, 1 p.m.), Bemidji State (Oct. 29, 1 p.m.) and Minnesota Duluth (Nov. 12, 1 p.m.). The Huskies went 4-2 at Husky Stadium last season and own a 48-20 record at home since the start of the 2004 season.
The St. Cloud State football team posted an eighth consecutive winning season last fall with a 6-5 overall record.
